La Tour Carnet

La Tour Carnet is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc region, situated adjacent to the renowned Fifth Growth Château Camensac. In the 1855 Classification, the estate was ranked as a Fourth Growth.

The origins of Château La Tour Carnet date back to the Middle Ages. Initially known as Château de Saint-Laurent, parts of the estate's structures were first erected in the 11th century. During the period of English rule in Bordeaux, the estate served as a crucial military stronghold. At that time, Château Latour-Canet was a fief granted by the English king to the House of Foix. However, the estate eventually returned to French hands, and much of the château was destroyed. Over the following two centuries, the estate changed hands multiple times.

In the early 18th century, the estate was acquired by Charles de Luetken, a gentleman of Swedish descent. This proved fortuitous for Château Latour-Canet, as it enabled the estate to evade the stringent laws imposed during the French Revolution. Subsequently, under the stewardship of this owner and his team, the estate was classified as a Fourth Growth in the 1855 Médoc Classification. In 1861, the estate passed to its heir, Oscar de Leutken, a prominent local deputy who also owned part of the Saint-Pierre vineyard. Despite his influential position, Château Latour-Carignan could not escape the ravages of phylloxera.

It was not until 1962 that Château Latour-Canet found new life under the stewardship of Mr Louis Lipschitz, a prominent Bordeaux shipbroker of Polish descent. He undertook extensive reconstruction of the estate's buildings and vineyards. In 1978, he passed the estate to his daughter, Marie Claire Pelegrin. Under her careful stewardship, the vineyard expanded to 45 hectares. Her husband, Mr Guy François, designed and built a rotating sorting table and a dual-track tractor, which represented a significant innovation at the time. The original prototype remains preserved at the château to this day. Despite their considerable investment in developing the estate's facilities, Bernard Magrez acquired the property in 1999.
