About Domaine Gavignet-Bethanie et Filles
Domaine Gavignet-Bethanie et Filles is a family-owned winery located in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges in Burgundy, France, specializing in the production of premium red and white wines. The winery, spanning approximately nine hectares and planted primarily with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, is located in the heart of the Côte de Nuits appellation. The winery is managed by sisters Christine Retiere and Claire Gardey, fourth-generation winemakers who continue the family tradition of creating wines that emphasize a "feminine style"—elegant, fruity, balanced, and fresh. The winery's history dates back to the early 20th century, formed in the 1970s through the merger of the Gavignet and Bethanie winemaking families. After founder Christian Gavignet (Christine and Claire's father) passed away from illness in 2003, their mother, Michèle, continued to oversee commercial development, while the sisters took over production, combining traditional techniques with modern technology. The wines are aged in oak barrels for 12 to 18 months, emphasizing the expression of terroir. They are sold directly through wine fairs throughout France.
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Aux Damodes" is one of the winery's flagship wines. It comes from the Premier Cru "Aux Damodes" vineyard in Nuits-Saint-Georges, located south of the village near Prémeaux. The vineyard's soil is a brown calcareous soil with a mixture of fine gravel, red clay, and silt, covered with cryoclasts derived from white limestone. The southern plot is more rocky and shallow, with exposed Prémeaux limestone adding a mineral note. The grape variety is 100% Pinot Noir, with limited production and suitable for aging.
