Located in the village of Pauillac, this wine was classified as a fifth growth in the 1855 classification of the Médoc!
Of the 90 hectares of Grand-Puy-Lacoste, 58 hectares are devoted to vineyards on gravelly topsoil underlain by a limestone layer, which is poor and well-drained. The selection of varieties according to the characteristics of the soil gives this outstanding terroir a better chance to express its qualities and personality. Currently, 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc are planted, with an average age of 38 years and a high density of 10,000 vines per hectare. The winery has 43 temperature-controlled fermentation tanks of various capacities, which are used to ferment the grapes from different plots individually to ensure that the terroir of each plot is maximised. Gentle fermentation is carried out for 8-10 days at a constant temperature of 28°C. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out at a constant temperature of 28°C, with the appropriate skins being poured to facilitate the extraction of tannins and colours. The mash is then macerated for approximately 10 days, followed by malolactic fermentation, which softens the wine's acidity, improves stability, and rounds out the texture. The wine is matured in French oak barrels (70% new) for 16-18 months, and has powerful yet velvety tannins, considered to be perfect and typical of traditional Pauillac wines.
The word ‘Puy’ in its name meant ‘hill’ in the Middle Ages, and it is one of the oldest châteaux in the Médoc, situated on the heights of the hilly terrain, enjoying an outstanding landscape and microclimate due to the estuary. The history of the estate was passed down through marriage from the 16th century until 1978, when it passed from Raymond Dupin to the Borie family, owners of the ‘Grand Cru’ Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Francois-Xavier Borie took over the reins of the estate. Francois Xavier Borie took over the management of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou and launched a series of initiatives to revitalise the estate, completely renewing the winemaking facilities, the cellars, etc., while his wife, Marie-Helene Borie, worked on the restoration of the château, including the renovation of the interior and exterior of the estate, the creation of green spaces around the estate, etc. The couple's efforts have led to the creation of a new winery. As a result of their efforts, the quality of Château Lagos' wines has risen to such a high level that Hugh Johnson, a renowned British wine writer and connoisseur, has praised the wines as having surpassed the rankings of a fifth-grade château.
Tasting notes
This is a very good vintage with quality underlined by cabernets sauvignons of exceptional nobility. This wine presents a very deep, dark red colour. The "bouquet” reveals aromas of complex fruits and hints of ripe blackcurrant. The attack on the palate is precise, very dense, and follows with an exceptional velvety richness. The tannins are suave and elegant. It shows a beautiful complexity, combining smoothness and purity. A very well balanced wine with a spectacular length. In one word, a Grand Puy Lacoste with the promise of a bright future!
