The history of Armut Distillery Co., Ltd. dates back almost as far as the post-independence era of India. Over the past 60 years, it has established itself as one of the world's leading economic powerhouses, and Armut Distillery has also experienced significant growth in its operational scale.

Armut Distillery Co., Ltd. was founded in 1948 with an initial investment of just a few hundred thousand rupees. The founder was the late Shri J.N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale (known as J.N.R.). Under his leadership, Armut Distillery grew rapidly and became one of the most popular suppliers of Indian-made spirits in the market.

Why has Armut Distillery surpassed Scotland to reach the pinnacle of the world? The primary factor is the location of the distillery. In Bangalore, India, the hot climate accelerates whisky maturation, resulting in a significantly higher annual evaporation rate of the ‘Angels' Share.’ While Scottish distilleries lose 1.5–2% of their original spirit annually, Armut Distillery experiences a staggering 12% loss. This inspired the name ‘Armut Distillery’—meaning ‘greedy angel’ in Hindi—symbolising its exceptional quality that transcends both age and region.

Furthermore, the carefully selected unpeated barley used in Armut whisky is grown in the Punjab and Rajasthan regions of northwestern India. The barley from Punjab is irrigated with water from the Yamuna River, which is fed by melted snow from the Himalayas, The alternating cold winters and hot summers produce barley with a rich, distinctive flavour. The malting process takes place in Jaipur and Delhi, after which the barley is transported to the distillery located on the Deccan Plateau at an altitude of 3,000 feet, where it is aged in premium oak barrels for at least three years.

In the whisky world dominated by Scotland, Armut brings a new flavour profile, reminiscent of Japanese incense, combined with the robust body of Scottish whisky. Upon its release, it sparked enthusiastic discussions among whisky enthusiasts worldwide.
