ZTF240-Bernard Levet Cote Rotie Amethyste 2016
$495/btl

The vineyards are nestled on shale-rich soil, resulting in a rich minerality. With optimal south-southeast exposures, the 11 Lieu-dit vineyards are scattered around Ampuis, such as Côte Brune, Côte Blonde, Landonne, Chavaroche, Mollard, Baleyat, and Côte Rozier (Gangloffey).
An interesting point: the Syrah planted at the winery is an ancient variety native to the Ampuis region: la Petite Serine. This unique variety boasts low yields, smaller bunches, and more airy, airy berries, resulting in smaller, but high-quality, berries. The right timing, location, people, and unique, ancient varieties are what make Cote Rotie's wines so distinct from other Syrahs worldwide, and what makes Domaine Levet's wines so special.
As mentioned earlier, in 2019, the winery began expanding its vineyards in Condrieu, a legendary dry white wine region in the Northern Rhône Valley. The winery's Condrieu vineyard is located in Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône, on a lieu-dit called Lamaraze. The winery owns 0.3 hectares of Viognier vines here, planted by Domaine Richard in 1986. Levet uses the same amount in Cote Rotie.

The 2016 Côte Rôtie Amethyste has exotic notes of gamy meats, medicinal herbs, beef blood, and iron. It’s nicely concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and shows the wild, sauvage character of this estate beautifully. It will benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 10-15 years.

Opaque ruby. Dark berry and floral qualities on the fragrant, spice-accented nose, along with an exotic apricotflourish. Round and open-knit, at least by Levet standards, offering cassis and blueberry flavors underscored by avein of juicy acidity. Finishes long and spicy, with repeating florality and sneaky, steadily building tannins.
