Winery


Chateau Desmirail is located in the Cantenac appellation of the Margaux region. In the mid-17th century, Chateau Desmirail was originally part of the Pierre de Mesures de Rauzan. Over time, the estate was divided, and by the 1855 classification, the original Pierre de Mesures de Rauzan had been split into four estates: Chateau Rauzan-Gassies, Chateau Rauzan-Ségla, Chateau Desmirail, and Chateau Marquis de Terme. In 1855, Chateau Desmirail was classified as a Third Growth. In 1905, the renowned composer Mendelssohn became the owner. Later, Chateau Desmirail was purchased by Lucien Lurton, whose family were prominent wine producers. Lucien spent 20 years rebuilding Chateau Desmirail, renovating each vineyard section of the original estate. He then purchased a building in the village of Cantenac and converted it into a wine cellar. The first harvest was in 1981. In 1992, Lucien's son, 33-year-old Denis Lurton, inherited Estate des Meaux from his father and is the current owner. Denis Lurton inherited his father's and family's long-standing winemaking expertise, consistently aiming to produce high-quality wines. The estate's flagship wine has received over 90 points in recent Vintages reviews from James Suckling, its quality beyond question.

Chateau Desmirail is located in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France, situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde River estuary, boasting a unique microclimate. The vineyards are primarily composed of Quaternary gravelly soils, which allow for ample sunlight absorption, protecting the grapes from frost damage and promoting sufficient sugar accumulation—ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon cultivation.

Regarding winemaking


The vineyards are managed sustainably, with strict control over the use of chemicals to promote healthy soil development and better preserve the terroir. Grapes are hand-harvested by a team of 60 people, then transported to the fermentation room for destemming, sorting, and crushing. Fermentation takes place in separate tanks according to different plots, allowing the wine to express the characteristics of different plots and grape varieties. Different containers are used for fermentation based on vine age. Owner Denis LURTON, Technical Director Pierre Lafeuillade, and legendary winemaking consultant Jacques Boissenot work together to select suitable containers for fermentation and aging of the flagship wine; older vines are often fermented in oak barrels. Afterward, the wine is aged for 12 months in at least 30% new oak barrels, with racking approximately every 3 months to clarify the wine. Once matured, the wine is transferred to large oak barrels and clarified using egg whites.

This wine is textured with its typical firm tannins. The fruit developing a spicy character. Berry flavors have a fresh edge giving final acidity. 

【Vinous 92 pts】
The 2021 Desmirail has a potentially endearing bouquet of black cherries, iris flower and peony; it just exudes "Margaux-ness.” The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite solid tannins, compact black fruit and a saline/oyster edge on the finish. Quite focused and delivering good length, this should age well in bottle.
