Winery

Chateau Puygueraud, located in the Côtes de Francs appellation of Bordeaux, France, is a renowned boutique winery within the region.

The Thienpont family, owners of Le Pin, purchased a plot of abandoned land in Côtes de Francs in 1946 and patiently waited for over thirty years, planting other crops on the vineyards to allow the land to regenerate and recover. Grape cultivation began in the 1970s, and Nicolas Thienpont took over. 1983 marked the winery's first vintage, initially receiving little market response. However, a recommendation from a highly regarded wine critic led to its discovery by the public. A wine nurtured over 30 years of anticipation and refinement, coupled with its exceptional quality at a reasonable price, it quickly became a favorite among wine enthusiasts in Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan! It's also worth mentioning that the winemaking consultant for this wine is one of my personal favorites, Stephane Derenoncourt.

Region

Château Pegalo's vineyards cover 25 hectares, situated on the slopes of the Franck Valley in Bordeaux, west of the Saint-Emilion appellation. After acquiring the estate, Georges began revitalizing the vineyards. He meticulously pruned the vines, arranging them neatly, and carefully selected new rootstocks and clones, ultimately retaining only those best suited to the region. He also planted grass between rows of vines to protect the soil and its microorganisms, and then loosened the soil between the other rows. Currently, the vineyards primarily cultivate Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, with an average vine age of 30 years.

During harvest season, Château Pegalo hand-harvests the grapes and then sorts them. The selected premium grapes undergo whole-berry fermentation in stainless steel tanks. After gentle extraction and maceration, the wine is transferred to oak barrels for malolactic fermentation (MLF). Following fermentation, the winery ages the wine on its lees, extending the contact time between the wine and the lees. The wine matures in oak barrels for 16 to 18 months before bottling at the winery.

Winemaking

Château Pegalo was purchased by Georges Thienpont in 1946. Prior to that, Georges had acquired Château Vieux Chertan in the Pomerol region. Currently, both Château Pegalo and Château Vieux Chertan are managed by the Thienpont family, with Château Pegalo being managed by Nicolas Thienpont.
