Chivas Regal Chivas Regal, based at the Strathisla Distillery in the Speyside region of Scotland, is a world-renowned blended whisky brand and a market leader in Europe and the Asia-Pacific whisky market, now owned by Pernod Ricard. It is now owned by Pernod Ricard.
Chivas Brothers was founded in 1801 when John and James Chivas opened a grocery shop in Aberdeen and in 1842, during Queen Victoria's first visit to Scotland, Chivas Brothers was honoured to be the royal supplier of food to Balmoral Castle and the following year received the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria. During Queen Victoria's first visit to Scotland in 1842, Chivas Brothers was honoured to be the royal food supplier to Balmoral Castle, and the following year was awarded the Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria for supplying the Queen's goods. in the 1850's, in response to demand for a smoother whisky, James experimented with blended whisky and launched Royal Glen whisky. This was followed by Royal Glen Dee and Royal Strathythan.
In the early 20th century, the economic boom stimulated the American whisky market, and the Chivas Brothers decided to produce aged blended whiskies for export to the United States, calling them Chivas Regal. The Chivas Regal 25 Year Old, launched in 1909, was a success, and Chivas became the leading brand in the American whiskey industry. However, the Prohibition of the 1920s shattered this prosperity and Chivas fell out of favour, returning to the US market in 1938 after a long hiatus with what is now known as Chivas Regal Aged 12 Years Blended Scotch Whisky. In 1949, the Canadian company Seagrams acquired Chivas, and the following year, Milton Distillery, renamed Strathisla, to provide single malt whisky for blending Chivas' blended whiskies, and to be the first company in Chivas to have a presence in the Keith area. It was also Chivas' home base in Keith. By 1960, Chivas had been exported to some 35 countries, with sales of over 100,000 cases in the U.S. In 2000, Chivas was sold to Pernod Ricard as part of the demerger of Schram's. Since then, Chivas has been sold to Pernod Ricard. Since then, Chivas has launched a series of limited editions and market exclusives, including the first Chivas Regal Mizunara Special Edition Blended Scotch Whisky aged in Japanese oak casks.
Targeted at the American upper class, Chivas produced a complex whisky with a higher malt content than most blended whiskies on the market at the time, and a typical Speyside style. Chivas Regal has long been a major player in the whisky market, with many of its expressions winning awards at international competitions such as the Scotch Whisky Masters and the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
