Between 1744 and 1750, the château was constructed under the supervision of Jean-Baptiste de Richon, then a lawyer at the Paris High Court and judge of the civil and criminal chambers of the Fronzac district. Shortly after its completion, Marie-Josèphe de Saxe – wife of Louis-Ferdinand de France (son of Louis XV), Dauphine of France, and mother of the last French monarchs including Louis XVI – resided here for a brief period. This event greatly enhanced the estate's renown, and it was renamed in honour of the princess's visit.

In 1985, François-Régis Marcetteau de Brem sold the estate to the Moueix family (owners of Château Pétrus, Château Cheval-Branche, Château Margaux, among others).

In 2015, the estate was taken over by the Labrune family, founders and owners of CEGEDIM, a healthcare technology and services company.
Building upon fifteen years of dedicated work by the previous owners, the Labrune family maintains the same strategy: cultivating exceptional wines through biodynamic methods that express the subtle nuances of the terroir.
Over its 350-year history, the estate has undergone successive expansions, with the vineyard now covering 53 hectares.

Dufour is one of the largest estates in the Libourne region.

Fronsac lies several miles west of the town of Libourne on Bordeaux's right bank, close to the northern banks of the Dordogne River. It is a renowned wine-growing region in eastern Bordeaux.
The foothills of the appellation predominantly feature alluvial soils along the Dordogne River, yielding grapes of exceptional quality. The slopes, situated slightly higher, exhibit topsoils predominantly composed of sand and gravel, limestone, and clay deposits. This allows the vines to withstand hot weather, with the grapes here not suffering from high temperatures but instead developing superior quality. The resulting wines exhibit more balanced flavours, aromas, and structure. Beyond the Dordogne, the Isle River traverses the appellation, endowing Fronsac with a comfortable temperate maritime climate. Abundant water sources foster favourable microclimates, significantly mitigating spring night frosts and tempering summer heat, creating an exceptionally favourable environment for grape cultivation.

The wines produced display a ruby-red hue, with an intense and distinctive bouquet featuring fruit and pepper notes alongside spicy undertones. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with substantial tannins that remain well-integrated, making them ideal for ageing. Fronsac wines are crafted from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, resulting in pure, opulent expressions with a complex character.
