Its founder, Francesco, established the first winery in Santo Stefano Belbo in 1953. Duchessa Lia Winery was established in 1953 when Francesco Capetta, founder of the Capetta family, built the first winery in the town of Santo Stefano Belbo, at the heart of Italy's Piedmont region. Situated at Corso Piave 140, this gateway to the Langhe region is now managed by the third generation of the Capetta family, who passionately preserve and elevate Piedmont's winemaking heritage. As Italy's largest producer and distributor of Piedmontese wines, Duchessa Lia focuses on environmentally sustainable cultivation and hand-picked harvests, strictly adhering to DOC and DOCG regulations. It produces over 20 varieties of red, white and sparkling wines, exported to Europe, America and Asia, becoming the preferred choice for gifting and dining occasions.
The brand name originates from a romantic 19th-century legend in the Monferrato villages: a commoner girl named Lia, born of humble origins yet honoured by villagers as ‘Duchessa’ (Duchess) for her innate grace and pure heart.
