ZAU068 Giant Steps Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir 2024
$420/btl

Type:Red Wine
Grape Varieties100% Pinot Noir
Region:Yarra Valley
ABV:13.5%

The Sexton vineyard sits on the steep slopes of the Warramate Mountains, in one of the Yarra Valley's most prestigious appellations. Its high north-facing slope results in a thin topsoil layer, with roots anchored in a shallow gravelly loam beneath a base of firm rocky clay. This environment naturally leads to lower yields, intensely flavorful fruit, and a high skin-to-juice ratio. The vineyard uses the G5V15 Pinot Noir clone, which adapts well to warm climates and sunshine, producing juicy, full-bodied wines. Sexton's Pinot Noir possesses a captivating texture, with aromas of black cherry, plum, and sweet spices, along with young and vibrant tannins.

Hand-harvested grapes undergo mixed fermentation in small oak and stainless steel tanks. The MV6 clone is fermented whole-cluster, while the remaining clones are destemmed and cold-macerated whole-berries for four days before fermentation begins. The final blend comprises 20% whole-cluster fermented grapes.

All batches were aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, with 25% in new barrels and 75% in old barrels. During aging, the wine remained still on its lees until blending in December. It was then gravity-bottled, without clarification or filtration.

The aromas are rich and pure: ripe black raspberry, blackcurrant fudge, cherry liqueur, wild red fruit, citrus peel, raspberry bush, gravel, and a hint of rose intertwine. On the palate, it is juicy and full-bodied, with mature, full, and firm tannins, a fine texture, and a well-structured character. Medium-bodied, it offers notes of dried strawberry, possessing excellent depth and tension, with hidden power. Compared to other single-vineyard Pinot Noirs of the same vintage, Sexton is the most abundant, fleshy, and direct, with a greater structure.

Halliday Wine Companion 96
A deep crimson ruby. Aromas of ripe dark raspberries, blackcurrant pastilles (these were always my favourite) and even a little kirsch. A touch of rose bush. The palate is juicy and fleshy and the wine’s ripe, plush tannins make this, along with the Primavera, the richest, meatiest and most immediate of the four single-vineyard pinots in ’24.

【James Suckling 96】
Pure and refined, with aromas of wild red fruits, summer flowers, citrus peel, raspberry bushes and crushed stones. The palate is firmly framed, with a high level of polish and a textural, mid-weighted mouthfeel, giving notes of dried strawberries. Great depth and tension, with underlying power.

【Wine Advocate 92】
The 2024 Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir is incredibly perfumed, with apples and rose petals, cherry and blood plum. In the mouth, the tannins are quite grippy and firm—still eminently fine but with rigidity. This is quite different from the other Pinot Noirs in this vintage release, more structural and not as complex.

In Australia's Yarra Valley, a region renowned as one of the world's best wine-producing areas for cool-climate climates, lies a winery named after a jazz melody—Giant Steps. Not only a legend in the Australian wine world, it also garnered significant attention in 2025, winning both the "Winery of the Year" and "Best Pinot Noir" awards at the Halliday Wine Companion.

Giant Steps' story began in 1997 when founder Phil Sexton, a brewing pioneer from Margaret River, was drawn to the Yarra Valley by his passion for wine, seeking the ideal place to cultivate pure and elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Phil is not only a winemaker but also a passionate jazz enthusiast. He named the winery after John Coltrane's classic album *Giant Steps*, hoping it would emulate the album's revolutionary "giant steps" in the world of wine.

In 2003, winemaker Steve Flamsteed joined Phil, initiating a single-vineyard winemaking project focused on expressing the terroir of different plots in the Yarra Valley. In 2021, the talented Mel Chester took over as Director of Winemaking and Viticulture, leading the winery to new heights. With a focus on grape selection and a commitment to restoring Château Haut-Brion wines to the quality and image of the early 20th century, he has established new milestones for the winery's style and reputation.

The Yarra Valley boasts the oldest viticultural history in Victoria, with a cool climate and diverse geology. Giant Steps currently owns and manages several top single vineyards within the Yarra Valley, each piece of land contributing a unique character to its wines.

Giant Steps' winemaking philosophy can be summarized in two words: Purity and Finesse. The winery adheres to sustainable development and organic farming, respecting the natural growth of the grapes.

In the winemaking process, the winery employs a low-intervention approach:

· 100% hand-harvested: ensuring the quality of every single grape.

· Local yeast fermentation: utilizing a natural microbial ecosystem to promote fermentation by local yeasts, adding complexity.

· Gravity Flow: in a modern gravity-flow winery, using physical principles to gently treat the wine, avoiding rough pumping.

· Minimal clarification and filtration: preserving the wine's most original flavors and textures.
