Henri Bourgeois Pouilly Fume Sauvignon Blanc 2023

The soil structure of the vineyards in the region is mostly unique marl, limestone and flint soil, which also makes the wine here taste the special flavor of minerals and gunpowder. It is this special flavor combined with the unique smoky and flint flavor of Sauvignon Blanc grapes that makes the Sauvignon Blanc wine here famous in the wine world.

Henri Bourgeois founded Henri Bourgeois in Chavignol in the Loire Valley. Chavignol is known for its cheese. Henri Bourgeois is the most important grape grower and wine merchant in the area. The Bourgeois family has been making wine in Sancerre for 10 generations. In 1950, the winery had only 2 hectares of vineyards. Today, under the leadership of Jean-Marie Bourgeois, the winery has 65 hectares of vineyards. Half of the grapes needed for the wine are grown by the winery itself, and the rest are purchased locally.

Henri Bourgeois subverts the scope of the Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume designations of origin and produces a wide variety of fine wines. Henri Bourgeois also has its own winery in New Zealand. The top wine in the Sancerre region is undoubtedly MD de Bourgeois. La Bourgeoise is delicious and excellent, and the grapes used are all picked from 50-year-old vines. Etienne Henri is made from the same quality grapes as La Bourgeoise, but needs to be fermented in new oak barrels. Sancerre d’ Antan is made from old vines planted in soil containing silica. In addition, Les Monts Damnes can also be used as a special collection. Grande Reserve is of excellent quality, but its grapes are both from the winery and purchased grapes. The red wines produced by Henri Bourgeois include both typical Henri Bourgeois and La Bourgeoise collection. The winery also produces some white wines made from late-harvest grapes.

Pouilly Fume is located on the hillside on the east bank of the upper Loire River, just one river away from the famous Sancerre region, with a vineyard area of ​​about 1,300 hectares. Like Sancerre, this region also occupies a place in the wine world for its Sauvignon Blanc wine. However, the wine styles of the two regions are quite different. In comparison, Pouilly Fume's wine is slightly better in density, structure and balance.
