Wow. This is a bold, brassy shiraz that carries a wealth of very intense aromas of ripe blackberries, dark plums, licorice and sweetly spiced earth. Still so very youthful and primary. The palate is so powerful, so mouth-filling and so, so juicy. This manages to deliver such intensity and composure. Supple, long and deep-set tannins and heroically expressive fruit. Really impressive

My pick of the recently bottled vintages, the 2016 The Armagh Shiraz shows a bit more obvious oak (simply because of its youth) but also a wonderful taut tension between ripeness and acidity. The fruit here is a bit redder in profile, leaning more toward raspberries than blackberries, while still being fully ripe. Full-bodied and supple, it finishes cedary, intense and long, adding in complex, lingering spice notes.
Jim Barry is one of the few wineries in Australia that has been rated as five-star by wine critic Robert Parker. The Armagh series was publicly praised by Robert Parker, and was compared with famous Australian wines such as Penfolds and Henschke by Langton's, a famous Australian wine auction company. Chuang Tong ranks as one of the most valuable Australian wines for investment.
The estate was established in Clare in 1959in the cool highlands of the North Mount Lofty Mountains, approximately 50kmnorth of the Clare Valley. It is a family-run winery dedicated to producing quality wines through innovative methods of viticulture and winemaking techniques.
Armagh is a single-vineyard wine first made in 1985 from unirrigated, low-yielding vines planted in 1968, yielding less than 1.2 tons per acre. The 8-acre Clare Valley vineyard is called "Armagh" because the area it is in was originally settled by the Irish in 1859 and named after their homeland. The area of the Armagh Vineyard contains some of the oldest rocks in the area, from the Rhynie Sandstone Formation, dating back more than 800 million years, and characterized by alight brown sandy clay topsoil, with pebble alluvium overlying the claysubsoil, with an annual average of Rainfall was 24 inches. Armagh is considered to be one of the best Shiraz in the country and is known around the world for excellence. Made from 100% Shiraz and aged in 50% American Oak and 50% French Oak. On the palate it presents intense black cherry fruit with silky tannins, licorice, spice and floral aromas and rich structure. A huge, concentrated style Armagh is high in alcohol and packs a punch.
