【Johnnie Walker】
Johnnie Walker, also known as "John Walker," originated in the town of Kilmarnock in Ayrshire, Scotland. Founded in 1820, Johnnie Walker is now a Scotch whisky brand under Diageo, and one of the world's most famous whisky brands. In 2004, it ranked 13th on Forbes' list of top luxury brands, the highest-ranking whisky brand.
Johnnie Walker is named after a farm boy named John Walker, whose father died in 1819. That same year, John opened a general store in the town of Kilmarnock. At the time, most general stores sold single malt whisky, but the quality was inconsistent. To ensure consistent quality, John blended the whisky and sold it under the trademark "Walker's Kilmarnock Whisky," a move that was a great success. John died in 1857, and his substantial fortune passed to his son, Alexander Walker. At that time, Britain was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution, with highly developed transportation systems, making it ideal for shipping goods. Alexander saw the business opportunity and in 1867 released Johnnie Walker's first bottle of whisky under the trademark "Old Highland Whisky." He also collaborated with ship captains to ship Johnnie Walker's whisky worldwide. Soon after, he began using the famous square bottle to reduce damage during transportation, and he also adopted a very distinctive label, a 24-degree angled label, which was highly recognizable.
In 1909, Alexander's sons, Alexander II and George, renamed their wines and decided to use color-coded labels, thus creating the Red Label and Black Label. At the same time, they adopted the logo designed by illustrator Tom Browne, featuring a "walking gentleman" figure wearing glasses, a hat, and a cane, knee-length trousers, and work clothes, resembling the founder Johnnie Walker, walking to the right. As Johnnie Walker continued to develop, the figure on the logo evolved: the image became simpler, and the details of the clothing were simplified. The longer the bottle remained on the bottling, the clearer and more defined the face of the figure on the bottle became. Thus, it became "Johnnie Walker," representing the gentlemanly image of the Edward Era. This image represents Johnnie Walker's pursuit of high quality, just as Johnnie Walker's brand philosophy "Keep Walking" says: "Keep moving forward and never give up." On January 1, 1934, Johnnie Walker received the Royal Warrant from King George V, thus becoming the Royal Warrant holder for whisky, a status it retains to this day.
Johnnie Walker owns approximately 10 million casks of undiluted spirit. Furthermore, Johnnie Walker began acquiring distilleries that supply spirit early on, such as Cardhu, Clynelish, Talisker, and Dailuaine. Currently, Johnnie Walker owns 28 single malt whisky distilleries, 17 of which are located in the Speyside region. This abundant spirit inventory ensures consistent quality and further enriches Johnnie Walker's product line and flavor profile.
Johnnie Walker's regular products, ranked from lowest to highest price and quality, can be divided into the Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky Label series, such as Johnnie Walker Blue Label Scotch Whisky and Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Scotch Whisky, the latter of which won the Best Scotch Blended award at the 2018 World Whiskies Awards. In addition, there is the premium John Walker & Sons series, such as XR 25 Year Old and King George V, as well as Johnnie Walker Limited Editions, such as White Walker by Johnnie Walker. These products are all sold in limited quantities and have commemorative significance.
