Lanius-Knab Winery has a 250-year history of family-run operation. Since 1991, Jörg Lanius has continuously upgraded and expanded the business. In 1992, the winery moved to an Art Nouveau villa with a two-story vaulted cellar, gradually acquiring additional vineyards. This process has led to the winery's development from a sideline operation with two hectares of vineyards to a full-time operation, currently managing 12 hectares of steeply sloping vineyards. Since 1995, the winery has been a member of the German Association of Quality Wineries (VDP).
The grapes are grown on VDP-certified plots of land, including Engehöller Bernstein, Engehöller Goldemund, and Oberweseler Oelsberg. These plots were classified as top vineyards in the 1801 Prussian Vineyard Classification. Low yields, ecological cultivation methods, and selective hand-harvesting are the secrets to the winery's natural uniqueness and authenticity.
VDP (Verband Deutscher Pradikatsweinguter) is a voluntary association of Germany's top wine producers. Its regulations, which generally exceed those of German regulations, represent the highest standards for German wine. The VDP has approximately 200 members, and their wines have their own classification system, similar to Burgundy, with four levels of classification from lowest to highest: regional Gutswein, village Ortswein, premier cru Erste Lage, and grand cru Grosse Lage/Grosses Gewachs.
Grosse Lage is a designation reserved for Germany's top vineyards. These clearly demarcated plots reflect the unique characteristics of their terroir, resulting in wines with rich, fruity aromas and long aging potential. GG, short for Grosses Gewachs, is used to designate dry wines from Grand Cru vineyards. This term has come to represent the highest quality of dry German wines.

This GG wine originates from the estate's finest plot, the Oberweseler Oelsberg. The vines grow directly on the Rhine River on steep slopes with a gradient of up to 75%. The soil here is a mix of schist, loess clay, and colored sandstone. This unique microclimate makes it ideal for growing Riesling, producing a powerful and vibrant wine with a strikingly complex fruit bouquet. The aroma shifts between exotic and local fruits, evoking grapefruit, orange, peach, and apple. The palate offers a juicy impression, while the spicy richness and lively acidity give the wine an exciting character, elevated to perfection by a delicate, silky finish and an impressively long finish.
