The legend of Louis Jadot Winery has continued for nearly 200 years since 1826, when Louis Henry Denis Jadot, the founder of Louis Jadot Winery, purchased the exclusive first-class vineyard Clos des Ursules in Beaune for his family.
【Long history, great family and great business】
In 1859, the Jadot family officially established Louis Jadot; in 1900, the discerning Jean Baptiste Jadot brought several top vineyards to the family business, including the famous Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru and the very hard-to-buy Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles.
In 1954, Andre Gagey was entrusted by his family to take over the management of the winery and brought some of his precious vineyards to the winery. Since 1992, Pierre-Henry Gagey has succeeded his father to manage the winery and served as the chairman of the Burgundy Wine Industry Association (BIVB). Until 2022, Thibault Gagey, the third generation of the Gagey family, served as the managing director of the winery and continued to manage this ancient famous house on behalf of the Jadot family.
Louis Jadot currently owns more than 160 hectares of vineyards in Burgundy, more than half of which are first- and grand cru vineyards with excellent terroir conditions. Particularly famous ones include Musigny, Chambertin, Clos de Beze, Bonnes-Mares, and Clos St Denis, which is planted with nearly a hundred years of rare old vines. The scale of the vineyards is enviable. The winery is large and powerful, and the "authentic" parts that are worthy of attention from enthusiasts mainly come from the following parts: Domaine Heritier Louis Jadot, the winery's precious "heritage", a considerable part of which is the exclusive vineyards that Louis Jadot values and are very representative; Familie Gagey, a series of excellent historical plots that became part of the winery after André Gagey joined in 1958; and Domaine Louis Jadot, which has expanded its territory again since 1985 and has a high proportion of elite grand cru vineyards.
【Winemaking philosophy of accurate expression of terroir】
In addition to heaven and earth, people are needed to build the golden triangle of terroir. From 1970 to 2012, Louis Jadot family invited the famous winemaker Jacques Lardière as the winery's chief winemaker, who laid a very stable quality foundation for the winery, carefully polished the accurate expression of each piece of terroir, so that every fine wine under the winery faithfully reflects the characteristics of the terroir, and established Louis Jadot's status as a quality master; the chief winemaker Frederic Barnier who took over later also continued this style well.
Louis Jadot adopts rational planting methods and is transitioning to organic cultivation. No herbicides are used in the vineyards. All grapes are picked and selected manually. Whether in the vineyards or in the wine cellars, wine is made according to the principle of "respecting nature and minimizing human intervention". The grapes are pressed as gently as possible and soaked for a long time. They attach great importance to the research and use of oak barrels. The proportion of new barrels is quite restrained, and almost all the oak barrels used are made by themselves. They follow strict standards to select materials and have strict requirements on the age of oak trees. They also extend the air-drying time of the barrels to pursue oak barrels with more delicate and mellow aroma and more restrained interaction with the wine. These are very rare in the whole Burgundy.
