Every year, the scores are incredibly high, not only much higher than those of other second growths, but in some vintages even higher than those of the Big Five. 
Scooped up the winemaker of Ch. Haut-Brion, a Big Five winery, and the general manager of Ch. Mouton-Rothschild to manage the winery. 
The youngest of all the grand cru châteaux, which has risen to the second tier in just 40 years after its founding, and is now recognised by all of the Big Five as a ‘super-second growth’.

Chateau Montrose is situated on a slope on the banks of the Gironde River. When the water fills in at midday, the whole mountain turns rose-coloured, hence the name ‘Montrose’. At the same time, the purple heather that blooms everywhere in the area adds to the romantic atmosphere of Montrose. Since 1989, Chateau Montrose's consistent quality has gradually surpassed that of Chateau Cos d'Estournel and Chateau Calon-Segur, both of which are equally renowned in the same village, and would be a first growth if it hadn't been so late in its development.
Thanks to the confidence of the owners over the years, Montrose has only improved since 1855. Each year the results have been astonishingly high, far exceeding those of other second growths, and in a few cases even the top five growths (RP100 2009 and 2010), making it a highly sought-after wine in the international marketplace!

The Terroir of Montrose





Montrose's grape varieties are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), which has a clay subsoil on warm, gravelly and permeable soils that help to store water for the grapes in drought conditions, allowing the grapes to ripen to full maturity and express the terroir's characteristic complexity.





Merlot in Montrose offers soft, feminine flavours, as well as smooth tannins and aromatic flavours, Cabernet Sauvignon is known for its elegant aromas and offers fresh, complex wines, while Petit Verdot brings colour and pleasing spice and pepper notes.

Montrose's Management Team





Since 2006, the estate has been run by brothers Martin Bouygues and Olivier Bouygues; recognising the potential of the estate, they have invested in the management of the estate by recruiting the winemakers of the five largest Château Haut-Brion wineries, as well as the general manager of Château Mouton-Rothschild, and have continued to upgrade the estate's equipment. In 2010, the Bouygues brothers expanded Château Montrose to 95 hectares, making it a key winery in Saint Estephe.







Hervé Berland, General Manager of Château Mouton-Rothschild with 35 years of experience in the wine industry, joined Château Rose in April 2012 from Château Mouton-Rothschild, taking the history of Château Rose to the very top.
