ZTF217 - Mouzon Leroux Champagne L'Incandescent Rose de Saignee Extra  Brut Grand Cru Blanc NV
Price: $460/bottle

Type: Champagne
Grape Varieties: 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay
Region: Champagne
ABV: 12.8%
Volume: 750ml

The grapes come from the Grand Cru village of Verzy. This champagne is named after Incandescence, the phenomenon where energy is applied to an object, raising its temperature to produce visible light; for example, a light bulb is an example of incandescence caused by a tungsten filament. Sébastien used this name to symbolize the Pinot Noir's 16-hour maceration period—longer than most wineries—to extract the richest phenolic compounds. It then undergoes a slow primary fermentation using native yeasts for up to six months. A second bottle fermentation lasts over 36 months, without clarification or filtration, resulting in this exquisite and captivating rosé champagne.

Winery

The history of Mouzon-Leroux dates back to 1778. The Mouzon family began cultivating grapes in the Reims mountains, and the current owner, Sébastien Mouzon, is the ninth generation, inheriting over three centuries of family tradition in viticulture and winemaking. Having earned his winemaking degree in Burgundy, Sébastien fully embraced the vineyard philosophies of many renowned Burgundy estates, demonstrating an almost obsessive dedication to terroir. He gradually transformed his vineyards organic, officially converting to biodynamic farming in 2008 and obtaining organic certification in 2011.

A diverse ecosystem is particularly important in Sébastien's vineyards. Dozens of plant species grow in the vineyards throughout the year. A cherry tree between the vines provides a habitat for birds, helping to control pests naturally.

Regarding the choice of grape varieties, Chardonnay is planted in the shallower, chalkier areas of Verzy village, while Pinot Noir is suitable for the richer clay soils. Furthermore, the flint scattered throughout the village lends Verzy wines an exceptionally fine minerality and a hint of smokiness. In Sébastien's hands, a style and character remarkably similar to that of the Burgundy Grand Cru, Gauden Charlieman, was born.

Region

The winery's vineyards total 10 hectares, all within 10 kilometers of the estate. 7.5 hectares are in Verzy, while the remaining 2.5 hectares are scattered across the neighboring Grand Cru village of Verzenay, and the Premier Cru villages of Ludes and Villers-Marmery, divided into 100 different appellations.

Of the 319 villages in Champagne, only 17 are classified as Grand Cru, and Verzy, where the winery is located, is one of these Grand Cru villages in the Hanseatic region. Like Bouzy and Ambonnay, it is situated in the southeastern part of the Hanseatic region and belongs to the sub-region of Grande Montagne de Reims. However, Verzy possesses a unique northeast-facing slope, combined with chalky soil beneath the topsoil, making it one of the most elegant and balanced representatives of the Hanseatic Grand Cru villages. It is also an important grape source for Veuve Clicquot.

Winemaking

For the winery, the grapes must reach full ripeness before harvesting, and no additional sugar is added. Fermentation is conducted solely with native yeasts, without interrupting malolactic fermentation. The use of sulfides and added sugar is kept to a minimum, all to ensure the carefully nurtured grapes clearly express the characteristics of the terroir. During secondary fermentation in the bottle, a deliberately low temperature of 14°C is used to allow fermentation to proceed as slowly as possible, resulting in an elegant texture with extremely fine bubbles. The oak barrels used are from Domaine Leflaive, a renowned white wine estate in Burgundy.
