Robert Mondavi
Robert was born in 1914 and died at the age of 94. Robert's parents were immigrants from Italy. They initially settled in Minnesota in the northern United States. Then moved to California. His father saw the potential of the California grape industry, quickly became a successful businessman, and sent Robert to Stanford University to study business and economic management. After his father bought the Charles Krug Winery, Robert was responsible for marketing and market at the winery, while his brother was responsible for winemaking. After their father's death, the two parted ways due to disagreements. In 1966, he left Charles Krug Winery and established his own Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley, California.
Currently, the winery is one of the largest and most iconic wineries in California, producing 1,500,000 cases of wine annually. The winery owns two vineyards in Napa Valley with a total area of 440 hectares. Each vineyard grows different grapes according to its own terroir characteristics, with Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon accounting for the majority. The winery mainly uses traditional methods to make wine, including manual picking and aging in oak barrels. The To Kalon vineyard behind the winery has the oldest vines in Napa Valley.
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a classic of the winery. Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the owner of Bordeaux’s first-class Chateau Mouton Rothschild, jointly created the American “king of wine”—Opus One, which was listed in James Suckling’s 2016 Top 100 Wines. It received a full score of 100 points in the famous wine list. It has become the most popular cult wine in the world and is known as the "King of American Wine".
