【Winery】

Vereinigte Hospitien, often compared to the German version of the Beaune Poorhouse, is a winery frequently mentioned in the wine industry.

Founded in 1804 by Napoleonic decree, the winery was formed by the merger of several medieval church hospitals and monasteries in the Trier region. It inherited numerous valuable vineyard plots from these monasteries, and all proceeds from wine sales are donated to social welfare causes such as elderly care, disability assistance, and medical aid. It is one of the few non-profit, top-tier wineries in Germany and a founding member of the VDP (Vintners Deutsche Grammophon) alliance of German wineries.

The "SEIT 1804" printed on the bottle is the winery's founding year, and the image of a pilgrim on the label is a classic symbol that has been used for over a century.

The winery does not pursue commercial profits; its winemaking focuses on expressing the terroir, adhering to hand-harvesting, minimal intervention in winemaking, and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks to maximize the preservation of the unique characteristics of each vineyard. The winery owns several VDP Grosse Lage vineyards in the Mosel and Saar Valley, with Piesporter Goldtröpfchen being its flagship plot.

【Region】

The grapes originate from the heart of the Central Moselle region, the purest and finest terroir of the Moselle, and the core growing area for the United Relief House winery. As a world-class Riesling region, the Moselle's unique valley terroir contributes to the signature crispness, high acidity, and complex minerality of Riesling.

The core of the region is its 400-million-year-old Devonian blue slate soil. This loose, porous slate absorbs ample sunlight during the day and slowly releases it at night, compensating for the lower temperatures of the high-latitude region. Its excellent drainage forces the vine roots to grow deep into the rock, absorbing deep minerals and imparting a distinctive, salty, mineral aroma reminiscent of wet stone and flint, making the wine highly recognizable.

The meandering Moselle River forms a natural temperature control system. The water reflects sunlight, increasing the temperature on the hillsides, resulting in a distinct diurnal temperature range that ensures the grapes ripen fully while locking in the characteristic vibrant and upright acidity of Riesling. The region's slopes are mostly steep (over 30°), making mechanized farming impossible. The entire planting and harvesting process is done by hand to preserve the fruit's full flavor and purity.

This wine is a VDP Gutswein, a blend of grapes from the winery's various premium slate vineyards. It precisely showcases the winery's authentic winemaking style and classic Moselle terroir, offering genuine quality without the premium associated with Grand Cru vineyards.

【Winemaking】

The winery adheres to the traditional Moselle concept of low intervention and terroir-focused winemaking, using no oak barrels and no added sugar to preserve the original flavors of the vineyards. All grapes are hand-harvested and individually sorted, removing diseased and unripe fruit, strictly controlling yield to concentrate the core flavors of the fruit.

After harvesting, a gentle, low-pressure whole-bundle pressing process is used to avoid crushing the seeds and stems, which would release bitterness and other off-flavors, preserving the purest grape juice. After pressing, the juice undergoes 24–48 hours of natural static settling without the addition of chemical clarifying agents. Only the high-quality free-run juice is collected to ensure a clean and transparent wine.

During fermentation, local natural yeasts are used, and slow fermentation occurs at a low temperature of 12–16℃. This process locks in the fresh primary fruit aromas of lime, white flowers, and green apple, while almost completely converting the grape's natural sugars, creating a pure Trocken dry style with a crisp and clean palate and no excessive sweetness.

Aging is carried out entirely in stainless steel tanks, completely avoiding the influence of oak barrel flavors and fully highlighting the slate minerality. Brief, light lees contact softens the wine, enhancing its roundness while maintaining a balance of freshness and complexity. Before bottling, it is lightly filtered and sealed with a screw cap for freshness, ensuring cleanliness and longevity. It also meets vegan wine standards, making it suitable for a wider range of drinking occasions.
