Winery

The winery was founded in 1670 by 2 Englishmen, William Burgoyne and John Jackson. It started as a company trading wine and all kinds of goods.

Warre's has been exporting since 1750 and by the end of the 17th century was the leading winery of port wines, with 21 wineries exporting 30000 barrels (pipes, 350-600 liters, typically 550 liters) in 1791, and Warre's accounted for 10% of the export volume!

The Symington Family now managed has had 350 years of experience in the Port wine trade, at first Walter Maynard had been trading Port wine as an English wine merchant in 1652. His descendant Beatrice Atkinson later married Andrew James Symington and the journey of the Symington family name began.

Andrew James Symington joined Warre in 1905 and by 1908 had taken over Warre, connecting the historic family to the leading port winery.

Warre's has many own vineyards like Quinta da Cavadinha, Quinta do Retiro Antigo and Quinta da Telhada, each owned by several family members, and in port wine there are not many wineries that own so many vineyards, the quality of the high quality vineyards managed in the home is naturally high

Winemaking

In terms of winemaking, Warre's believes that using traditional lagares (shallow sinks) foot stepping on the skin can make the best Port, so Warre made the world's first automatic machine that imitates the human foot stepping on the skin, becoming a milestone in modern Port wine brewing!

Warre's has always contributed a lot to port wine and is a high-quality classic winery, both in the port wine trade and winemaking.

Loads of wet earth and grape aromas with hints of stems. Old vine aromas of bark and moss. Full-bodied, sweet and structured with a big kick on the end. Very impressive. Exceptional layers of fruit and energy. A stronger and more muscular Warre.

Wine Advocate 94-96 pts

The 2017 Vintage Port is mostly a field blend from old vines (63%), plus 22% Touriga Nacional and 15% Touriga Franca, bottled about a month before this tasting after 18 months in seasoned vats. The just-bottled sample was not actually used for fear it might be in shock, so this is actually a pre-bottling sample. It comes in with 110 grams of residual sugar.
