Aglianico

Italian ancient wine grapes

Aglianico is a wine grape considered one of Italy's oldest and most valuable varieties. It is grown mainly in the Campania and Basilicata regions of southern Italy and produces fine red wines in regions such as Montevetrano and Taurasi.

History

The Aglianico grape is considered to be one of the varieties introduced to Italy during ancient Roman times and has a long history. It was first cultivated in the Campania region and later became widely cultivated in the Basilicata region. This variety has gained high esteem in these regions and has been called the "Barolo of the South", meaning that its quality and aging potential are comparable to the Barolo wines of northern Italy. Three thousand years ago, the Greeks brought Aglianico to southern Italy to develop and take root. It also has the ancient name Vitis Hellenico (from the Greek grapevine). From the Roman emperors to the Popes in the 16th century, they also fell in love with the wine made from Aglianico, becoming one of the most historic noble red grape varieties in Italy. Early grapes were called Ellenico (Greek) and were officially named Aglianico in the 15th century.

Feature

The Aglianico grape is characterized by its dark color, thick skin and high acidity, which results in wines with rich color, rich tannins and balanced acidity. It is usually made as a single variety, but can also be blended with other varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in Monteverto wines.

Aglianico wines typically have rich black fruit flavors such as blackberry, black cherry and black plum, with complex notes of spice, smoke and leather. These wines typically require long periods of aging to develop their rich flavors and soft tannin structure.

Planting environment

Aglianico grape is a relatively difficult and challenging variety, with high climate and soil requirements. It prefers warm and dry climates and is grown in mountainous areas at higher altitudes. The grapes take a long time to ripen, so they are usually harvested in late autumn. It has a thick skin and high acidity, which gives the wine good structure and aging potential.

Aglianico is mainly grown and brewed in the Campania region in Senicero (Taurasi) and Montevetrano (Montevetrano). The Senicero region is famous for its high-quality Aglianico wines, which often require long aging to bring out their best flavours. Monteverto is famous for its Aglianico wine, which is blended with other varieties.

DOCG

Taurasi is located northeast of Avellon in the interior of Campania and is the first DOCG-rated production area in southern Italy. Taurasi is a mountainous area 400-700 meters high. The soil formed by volcanic rocks allows the Aglianico wine produced to exude the aroma of chocolate and plums brought by the volcanic rocks, with a deep color, high tannins and acidity. Taurasi is known as Barolo in southern Italy and produces the most acclaimed wines in Italy. It uses at least 85% Aglianico wine. Most of the top Taurasi are made with 100% Aglianico. Most wines need to be aged for more than 8 years.

Aglianico del Taburno was built in 1986 and received DOCG designation in 2011. Its western side is close to the side of the Apennine Mountains. This region produces only two red wines and one rosé wine: Aglianico del Taburno Rosso, Aglianico del Taburno Rosso Riserva and Aglianico del Taburno Rosato (Agnico Tabno rosé wine). The grapes are all grown by the winery itself. The Aglianico wine here is the most rustic of all Aglianico DOCG wines, all made from 100% Aglianico, with aromas of leather, earth and dried herbs, as well as tart black fruit flavors and very firm tannins. .

Aglianco del Vulture in Basilicata is the only DOC production area in the region. It mainly produces Aglianco-based wines, but this production area rarely exports wine. Vulture means vulture volcano, which represents its volcanic soil. The wine here is more delicate than that of Taurasi. The basic version of Aglianico del Vulture must be aged for one year, the wine labeled ‘Vecchio’ must be aged for three years, and the wine labeled ‘Riservas’ must be aged for at least five years. In recent years, Vulture's wines are of excellent quality and have the potential to surpass Taurasi.
