Blanc de Noirs

Blanc de Noirs refers to white champagne made from 100% red grapes. Although the use of red grape varieties to make white wine is less common in other regions, it is very common in Champagne. How is Blanc de Noir Champagne made? When squeezing juice, you can reduce the intensity of squeezing and shorten the contact time between the peel and juice to avoid extracting the natural pigments of red grapes, causing the wine to be colored. Despite this, the color of the wine is generally darker than Blanc de Blanc and is golden yellow.

Major gape variety

Blanc de Noir Champagne mainly uses Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, which can be prepared separately or blended. Stylistically, the fruit flavors are generally more intense than Blanc de Blancs Champagne. Pinot Noir brings the elegant flavor of red berries (cranberries, strawberries) while enriching the body and structure of the wine. Pinot Meunier brings out the thick body, fruit flavor and floral aroma, and is used in a smaller proportion.

Region

The Champagne production area can be mainly divided into four major regions: Montagne de Reims, Vallee de la Marne, Cotes de Blanc, and Cote de Sezanne. The following will introduce the two production areas that mainly grow red grapes, Montagne de Reims and Vallee de la Marne.

Montagne de Reims

Montagne de Reims mainly grows Pinot Noir. The terrain of the production area is higher, and the local Pinot Noir has a rich fruit aroma and a tight structure. The Bouzy Grand Cru in the production area is very famous, covering an area of about 360 hectares, 85% of which is planted with Pinot Noir.  Champagne from here often shows long-lasting characteristics, and it also produces excellent quality still red wine, accounting for about 10% of the total production of Pinot Noir.

Vallee de la Marne

In addition to Pinot Noir, the Pinot Meunier grown in Vallee de la Marne is known for its plump and plump style.  There are two special gardens in the local area, namely Tours-sur-Marne and Ay. Tours-sur-Marne is located at the intersection of the Marne Valley and the Blancs Mountains, covering an area of approximately 53 hectares. It is the southernmost Grand Cru in the Reims Mountains. The location is unique. Among them, the champagne winery of the top brand Laurent Perrier is located here.

Ay is located to the west of Tours-sur-Marne. It was a vineyard that was first planted in the Roman period. Because it is close to the river Marne, it was easy to trade and transport the brewed wine in the early days. . The vineyard covers an area of about 350 hectares, 80% of which is planted with Pinot Noir, and the rest is Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Together with Bouzy, it is considered the top Pinot Noir origin in the Champagne region; Côte aux Enfants and Le Léon are considered the best in the region. of land. Famous champagne brands Ayala, Bollinger, Deutz and Gosset are all located in this area.

Food Pairing

Although Blanc de Noir Champagne has different styles and tastes based on the year of brewing, year of disgorgement, blending ratio, etc. Generally speaking, in addition to being used as an aperitif, Blanc de Noir Champagne is thicker in body and has a distinct fruity feel. Blanc de Noir Champagne is very suitable with all kinds of food. It can be a great addition to various main meals such as fish, chicken, duck, and even veal or pork.
