Chateau Chasse Spleen

Chateau Chasse Spleen was the first winery to become Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel (only 6 wineries were selected) in 1932, and was the leader among the Cru Bourgeois. In 2003, the first official evaluation of Bordeaux Crus Bourgeois was held, and it was officially rated as Grand Cru Bourgeois. In 2010, the evaluation of Crus Bourgeois was no longer subdivided, and the winery withdrew from the evaluation together with Chateau Poujeaux and other Grand Crus Bourgeois.

In 1720, Monsieur Gressier built some buildings on the gravel hills near Paulliac in Bordeaux, and in 1740 it was officially built into a village for winemaking and the winery was founded. In 1860, the then female owner changed the name to Chateau Chasse-Spleen, which means "forget your worries". After several changes of ownership, it was not until the 1970s that the experienced Merlaut family acquired the winery and pushed the winery to a new level; in the late 1990s, the third generation owner updated the equipment and brewing style, and the wine quality was even better.

Vineyard & Wine

The winery is located in the Moulis district, which is between St. Julien and Margaux. The average age of the trees is 30 years, and the planting density is 8,000 to 10,000 trees on gravel, clay and calcite soils. After hand-harvesting, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel and concrete fermentation tanks, and then aged in oak barrels for 12 to 14 months (40% are new barrels). The wine produced has a ruby red color and tastes of black currant, licorice, cocoa, black cherry, mulberry leaf and spices. The structure is balanced, the tannins are fine and mature, the taste is round and full, the aftertaste is good, and the concentration is high.

Decades of growth have ensured the excellent and stable quality of the wine and established its own brand image in the industry. Even though it is not included in the 2020 Crus Bourgeois selection, its reputation among the many Bordeaux wineries is far greater than many Crus Bourgeois and even classified wineries. Even the well-known wine critic Robert Parker has praised it highly and even said that it has the value of a Bordeaux third growth. It is worth mentioning that the 7th episode of the Japanese manga Drops of God also specially introduced 1970 Chasse-Spleen, describing it as a wine that can make people forget about work and taste it well.
