Vina Emiliana winery was founded in 1986, but its real takeoff came in the late 1990s. Owners Rafael and José Guilisasti recognized the global trend towards health and environmental protection, and together with Chilean biodynamic pioneer Álvaro Espinoza, they gradually built Emiliana into South America's first biodynamic and organic winery.
Today, Emiliana boasts over 1,000 hectares of organic vineyards spread across various Chilean wine regions, making it the world's largest organic winery and the largest biodynamic winery! The Adobe series is also the best-selling organic wine in Chile, with a market share of 59.9%! Beyond its scale, many of its wines have consistently received high scores from wine critics. Its flagship wine, Ge, was ranked #1 on JS's 2021 list of Chile's Top 100 Wines. In recent years, it has been acquired by the Almaviva Group's Concha y Toro, making it one of Chile's most prestigious wineries!
The winery's driving force, Álvaro Espinoza, is the founder and president of the Chilean Biodynamic Growers Association, a pioneer of Chilean biodynamic farming! He has worked at prestigious wineries such as Château Margaux, Moët & Chandon, and Viña Carmenere, making Carmenere a key figure in the development of Chile's national grape variety! His numerous contributions earned him a place on Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book 2010 as one of the four most influential figures in Chilean wineries.
【產區 Region】
Colchagua Valley is located in the Rapel Valley, a region in Chile's Central River Valley where winemaking is increasingly popular. To the north lies Cachapoal, and to the south, the burgeoning Colchagua Valley. This region boasts a sunny and stable climate. The Los Robles vineyard, situated on a south-facing hillside, benefits from the fact that in the summer afternoons, the slopes are not directly exposed to direct sunlight. The cooler temperatures after sunset slow down photosynthesis, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly, develop aromas, and maintain a balanced acidity and sugar content. The soil structure is diverse due to its location in a river valley, including clay, sand, and granite. This terroir is ideal for cultivating top-quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Carmenere grapes.
The vineyard is situated at an altitude of 245 meters, on a south-facing slope. Most of the vines are ungrafted. The soil is primarily composed of volcanic rocks formed from colluvial deposits, providing excellent drainage that allows the roots to reach deeper and absorb more water and minerals. Its proximity to a river also brings in some deposited sand and silt. After harvesting, the grapes undergo double sorting via two conveyor belts. Nine grape varieties are used, and the skin maceration process lasts 20-25 days to enhance flavor. Fermentation uses natural yeasts, and the 18-month aging process utilizes:
75% in 225-liter French oak barrels (including new, once-used, and twice-used barrels)
15% in 2000-liter and 5000-liter large oak barrels
and 10% in egg-shaped cement vats
Finally, the vines are bottled after a low-level filtration process – a very meticulous process!
