ZAU066 Giant Steps Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2024
$220/btl

Type:Red Wine
Grape Varieties100% Pinot Noir
Region:Yarra Valley
ABV:13.5%

100% hand-harvested and rigorously hand-selected in the vineyard. Upon arrival at the winery, the processing method for each batch is determined based on the cultivar, vineyard, vineyard maturity, and flavor profile. Whole-cluster fermentation batches are carried out under warm conditions with minimal agitation, lasting 14 days. Destemmed whole-grain batches undergo a 3-day cold maceration, followed by warming to initiate fermentation naturally. All cap management employs gravity draining and backwashing for gentle extraction, followed by pressing.

Each batch is then transferred by gravity to French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation, with lees retained for aging. After eight months (10% new barrels, 90% old barrels), the batches are blended in the spring, and then bottled by gravity in December without clarification or filtration.

The aroma is rich and captivating, with a complex interplay of red cherry, raspberry, rosehip, pomegranate, and strawberry notes, accompanied by pepper, licorice, rose petals, orange peel, and a subtle hint of saltiness, along with delicate earthy notes and the sweetness of vanilla. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, smooth and silky, with fine, powdery tannins that are slightly astringent, and bright, lively acidity. Even young, it exhibits exceptional drinking pleasure, with a lingering floral and fruity finish that is juicy and beautiful, making it a model of excellence in its price range.

【Halliday Wine Companion 95】
A very bright crimson purple. Pretty and complex with aromas of red cherry skins and rhubarb together with some pink peppercorn spice and a light savoury edge. More approachable than the '23. As a young wine, the medium-bodied palate is spicy, silky and long. It'll probably age well but it's so good to drink now that there's no need to bother!

【James Suckling 94】
Perfumed and lifted, with red-fruited aromas of red cherries, rose hips, ferric earth, red licorice and ruby grapefruit. The palate is plush and mid-weighted, with finely tuned tannins and bright acidity, finishing lush, floral and pretty.

【Wine Advocate 93】
The 2024 Pinot Noir is bright and fresh—I can smell the cherries and strawberries without lifting the glass. Perfumed and delicious, it also has rose petals, orange zest, scraped vanilla pod and pomegranate. In the mouth, the wine feels easy, effortless, silky and fresh, with a gently drying, chalky tannin finish. It's an exemplary wine for the money.

In Australia's Yarra Valley, a region renowned as one of the world's best wine-producing areas for cool-climate climates, lies a winery named after a jazz melody—Giant Steps. Not only a legend in the Australian wine world, it also garnered significant attention in 2025, winning both the "Winery of the Year" and "Best Pinot Noir" awards at the Halliday Wine Companion.

Giant Steps' story began in 1997 when founder Phil Sexton, a brewing pioneer from Margaret River, was drawn to the Yarra Valley by his passion for wine, seeking the ideal place to cultivate pure and elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Phil is not only a winemaker but also a passionate jazz enthusiast. He named the winery after John Coltrane's classic album *Giant Steps*, hoping it would emulate the album's revolutionary "giant steps" in the world of wine.

In 2003, winemaker Steve Flamsteed joined Phil, initiating a single-vineyard winemaking project focused on expressing the terroir of different plots in the Yarra Valley. In 2021, the talented Mel Chester took over as Director of Winemaking and Viticulture, leading the winery to new heights. With a focus on grape selection and a commitment to restoring Château Haut-Brion wines to the quality and image of the early 20th century, he has established new milestones for the winery's style and reputation.

The Yarra Valley boasts the oldest viticultural history in Victoria, with a cool climate and diverse geology. Giant Steps currently owns and manages several top single vineyards within the Yarra Valley, each piece of land contributing a unique character to its wines.

Giant Steps' winemaking philosophy can be summarized in two words: Purity and Finesse. The winery adheres to sustainable development and organic farming, respecting the natural growth of the grapes.

In the winemaking process, the winery employs a low-intervention approach:

· 100% hand-harvested: ensuring the quality of every single grape.

· Local yeast fermentation: utilizing a natural microbial ecosystem to promote fermentation by local yeasts, adding complexity.

· Gravity Flow: in a modern gravity-flow winery, using physical principles to gently treat the wine, avoiding rough pumping.

· Minimal clarification and filtration: preserving the wine's most original flavors and textures.
