Bitters History:
Originally, cocktail bitters were theingredient that distinguished cocktails from other categories of beverages suchas Toddies, Slings, Fizzes, Sours, or Punches. For decades, they were anessential component of good cocktail creations. The start of prohibitioncurtailed consumers’ drinking habits, and cocktail bitters almost sank intooblivion. Only a few brands survived that period, but even after that, not allof them managed to reestablish themselves in the new market.
The founding of The Bitter Truth:
For some time now, there has been aresurgence in the popularity of cocktail bitters, and bitters are now againconsidered to be the spice rack for your bar. Since 2006, the Germancompany The Bitter Truth has been doing its share to contribute tothis development. It all started during a visit to the London Bar Show in June2006. At that show, Munich bartenders Stephan Berg and Alexander Hauck gavebirth to the idea of producing and distributing cocktail bitters, as they werehard to find in Germany or elsewhere if at all.
Both of them had already gained aconsiderable amount of experience in producing handmade cocktail bitters forthe bars they were working at. Also, Stephan owned a large collection ofcurrent and historical bitters, some of which hadn’t been produced for decades.Thus, he knew how the most well-known bitters of the world tasted and wasconsidered a specialist in this area.
Their criteria for the choice of flavorswas mainly provided by old cocktail recipes that could no longer be mixed trueto the original because one crucial ingredient had been missing – the correctbitters.
The Bitter Truth Products:
In August 2006, the first productsfrom The Bitter Truth were released: With Orange Bitters and OldTime Aromatic Bitters being first, followed shortly after by LemonBitters. Since then additional flavors have been added to the range: JerryThomas Bitters, Creole Bitters, Celery Bitters, GrapefruitBitters, Chocolate Bitters, Tonic Bitters, Peach Bitters, CucumberBitters, and Olive Bitters. The much loved Bitrters Traveler`s Set holds5 different flavors in a convenient size of 100ml/3 oz suitable for carry-onluggage and has later seen a little brother when Bitters Bar Pack with5 modern flavors was released. Also, The Bitter Truth has released arange of fine liqueurs & flavored spirits such as Apricot Liqueur, VioletLiqueur, Elderflower Liqueur, Golden Falernum, Pimento Dram & PinkGin.
