Although wine culture is relatively new in China, China has become the world's fifth largest wine consumer and the market cannot be ignored. Especially the development of China's own wine industry. In the 1980s, China began to focus on the development of modern winemaking technology. China's wine production has surpassed many classic wine producing regions and ranked 9th in the world in 2018.

Unlike other wine producing countries, China's wine industry appears to be strongly supported by the local government. Brands like Great Wall and Changyu produce popular products and provide affordable wines to cover the Chinese market. In recent years, with the rise of some small wineries and investment from foreign investors, especially in Ningxia, Xinjiang and Yunnan. The wines from these wineries place greater emphasis on terroir characteristics and brewing techniques, injecting new vistas into China's wine industry.

Main grape varieties

The main wine grapes used in Chinese wine include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Gernischt (also known as Carmenere), Merlot and Marselan. Among them, Cabernet Sauvignon plays an important role. In the early stages of China's wine industry, Bordeaux had a profound influence on it, and was the main model for imitation in terms of grape variety selection, brewing technology, and winery construction. In the past, Cabernet Gernischt was dominant and the variety was introduced to China in the century. Grape geneticist José Vouillamoz discovered that it is actually Carmenere, so it is considered to have the same aroma of green pepper as Carmenere.

Another unique variety in China's wine industry is Marselan, a red grape originating from southern France. Developed by Professor Paul Truel in 1961, Marselan is a crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache with good resistance to powdery mildew. As a result, it performs well in wetter regions such as Shandong, producing medium-bodied wines with flavors close to Cabernet Sauvignon.

Major wine regions in China

China has a vast territory with diverse winemaking terrain and climatic conditions. Coastal areas, such as Shandong Province, experience heavy rainfall and frequent monsoons during the growing season, which have a significant impact on wine quality. Inland areas, such as the Helan Mountains in Ningxia, span the Gobi Desert, creating an arid growing environment. There are 12 major wine producing regions in the country, of which the following three are famous for their high quality and high yield.

Shandong Province – Yantai, Penglai and Qingdao

Shandong is China's largest wine producing region, producing more than 40% of China's wine. China's first modern winery, Changyu, was established here in 1982. The geographical latitudes of Yantai and Penglai are similar to those of Bordeaux, so these two production areas have many similarities with Bordeaux in terms of growing environment. In 2018, the famous French Bordeaux winery - Chateau Lafite Rothschild launched its first Chinese brand: Domaine de Long Dai, located in the Qiu Valley in Penglai. Chateau Lafite Rothschild began investing in 30 hectares (75 acres) of Cabernet Sauvignon, Marselan and Cabernet Franc on this granite soil in 2008. Shandong's climate is a typical maritime climate. Being close to the sea, the monsoon and high rainfall pose challenges to grape cultivation. Disease pressure at plantings is high, similar to Bordeaux.

Ningxia – Helan Mountain East

Ningxia is China's most acclaimed wine-producing region, mainly planting Bordeaux varieties. Ningxia became famous after four of its wines were selected in the top five in a blind tasting competition called “Bordeaux vs Ningxia”. Ningxia has about 93,900 acres (38,000 hectares) of vineyards, making it China's second-largest wine-producing region. There are as many as 200 wineries in the region, most of which are located in the low mountains and hills on the eastern foot of the Helan Mountains. In 2013, Ningxia established its own classification system, based on the 1855 Bordeaux classification, which is updated every two years. There are currently 35 wineries included in the classification system. Ningxia is unique in its relatively isolated location and extreme climate. The area is located on the eastern edge of the Gobi Desert, and the grapes need to survive the harsh cold climate. In addition, Ningxia is located at an altitude of about 1,200 meters (4,000 feet) and has strong sunshine.

Yunnan - Himalayas Mount Range

Located in the Himalayas of Yunnan, it borders Laos and Myanmar. Generally speaking, tropical regions do not seem to be suitable for making high-quality wine. However, due to the high altitude (2,600 meters) provided by the Shangri-La Mountains, the temperatures are relatively low, allowing the cultivation of high-quality wine grapes. Niagara Grape from America and Rose Honey from France are among the local specialty grape varieties. The most famous winery in the area is the Ao Yun winery project built in Yunnan in collaboration with LVMH. Led by the famous Australian winemaker Tony Jordan, the first batch of Ao Yun wine was made from grapes from the 2013 vintage and received rave reviews. , making Yunnan gain more attention from the global wine industry.
