Loma Larga Vineyards 羅馬莊園
【Loma Larga – Pioneer of Casablanca】
Loma Larga's great-grandfather Don Manuel Joaquín Díaz Escudero Alvarez de Toledo personally led the team to participate in the Paris and Bordeaux Adventure journey. Consulting with French winemakers, he planted these vines on his farm, "Chakra Victoria", located in the area east of present-day Santa Rosa Street in the city of Santiago. With the dream of preserving this wine-growing tradition, it leads its ancestors to produce high-quality wines. So much so that the Diaz Santelices family was one of the first Chilean winegrowers to promote Chilean wines to international recognition.
In 1889, Don Manuel went to Paris to display wine at the famous World's Fair. In order to continue the winemaking history and winemaking techniques of their ancestors, the current generation established the Loma Larga vineyard in Casablanca, an unexplored wine producing area. Beginning in 1995, Patricio Diaz, his wife Rosita Santelices and their son Felipe spent five years carefully analyzing the climate and soil of the estate. Each vine is carefully tended and a fairly detailed map of the vineyard is drawn.
【Casablanca. The elegant side of Chile]
The wine is 100% from Casablanca, which is a cooler place in Chile. The Loma Larga winery has a limited area, and the owner hopes that every bunch of grapes will be of high quality. For this purpose, the best grapes are harvested by hand, producing an average of up to 6 tons of wine per hectare, thus keeping the grapes rich and ripe in a cold region like Casablanca. The slow ripening of the grapes is due to changes in extreme temperatures during the day and night, a phenomenon caused in the valley by cold winds from the Pacific Ocean. This characteristic, in addition to the poor soils of the mountains, the Maspalomas and Cerro foothills, provides the wine with a unique terroir!
【Philosophy】
Roma Estate's philosophy is to produce wines that faithfully express the terroir, with a commitment to reflecting the character of what this place has to offer in Casablanca, and have been conducting research and testing for over 20 years, allowing it to stand out from the vast majority of Chilean wines. For five years, the temperature and soil of a total of 711 hectares of the Loma Larga estate were studied. Starting in 1999, 148 hectares of vineyards were planted with white varieties, some of which are not traditional vineyards of the Casablanca Valley, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Syrah.
This avant-garde idea has been a success since the first harvest. For the general public, the wines of Loma Larga have unusual characteristics, notably their freshness and great aromatic potential. The winery is considered a major red wine stronghold in Chile’s cold climate!
Loma Larga Quinteto 2021
The wine is made from up to 5 types of grapes, which is quite rare in Casablanca. It is one of the most distinctive wines in the entire Loma winery. The grape varieties used have their own characteristics, bringing different levels to the wine.
Cabernet Franc: delicate taste, natural fruity sweetness
Syrah: Black pepper, smokey finish
Merlot: The fruity flavor of red berries balances the acidity
Malbec: Brings out the aroma of D-cloth, and the fruity flavor blends well with the woody flavor.
Pinot Noir: The floral scent of orchids
