Navarra|DiversitySpanish Wine Region|Wine Time

Navarra (Navarra Wine Region)

The grape-growing area of the Navarra AOC is located in the northern and eastern borders of Rioja (Rioja) in Spain and extends to the Pyrenees (Pyrenees), covering an area shaped like an inverted triangle. The climate is similar to Rioja. Villa Peninsula) is unique and marked by the confluence of Atlantic, inland and Mediterranean climates. In the north is the area around the Bay of Biscay (Bay of Biscay), the influence of the Pyrenees and the temperate climate of the Ebro Valley (Ebro Valley) in the south are key factors that give Navarra a unique and different climate. In the north, the climate is cooler and at higher elevations, while the southern regions have a more Mediterranean climate with dry summers.

Navarra DO protects vineyards and wines in just 95 towns and in 2015, Navarra celebrated its 80th anniversary, making it one of the oldest appellations in Spain. However, the history of winemaking in the region goes back much further, as both viticulture and winemaking techniques are documented as far back as Roman times. At the end of the 19th century, the Navarra wine industry was booming, but when the phylloxera hit, only 1500 hectares of the region's total 50,000 hectares of vines remained! At present, Navarra has about 11,700 hectares of vines, from where more than 100 wineries plant precious grapes.

Diverse wine regions

The diversity of Navarra DO is made up of five distinct wine regions: "Baja Montaña", "Tierra Estella", "Valdizarbe", "Ribera Alta" and "Ribera Baja". Rainfall, soil composition and topography create the microclimate, which in turn determines the grape varieties best suited to each region. The soils in this appellation are predominantly calcareous and limestone, deep with variable fine stony texture and fertility, medium to light in consistency and very healthy, a phenomenon that allows Navarra D.O. to produce a wide range of wines, from intense reds to fresh and elegant whites to vibrant rosés that have always been the hallmark of the region. In the Spanish national wine market, Navarra is known for its fruity and dark rosé wines.

Variety of grape varieties

In the 1980s, non-native varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were introduced. These varieties started to be planted together with native Viura, Garnacha and Tempranillo, the most widely grown and most popular variety in the region (about 6,800 hectares, or about 35% of the total planted area in the region). Most of the region's vineyards (over 70%) are planted with native varieties, and around 90% of the grapes grown in Navarra are red wine, with the remaining 10% white. The grape varieties recognized by appellation, from most planted to least planted are: red grape varieties Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Graciano, Mazuelo, Syrah and Pinot Noir; white grape varieties are Chardonnay, Viura , Moscatel de Grano Menudo, Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasía  and Garnacha Blanca.

Navarra, which produces red, rosé, and white wines, was known for its traditional rosé wine until the 1980s and has since become one of the most experienced winemaking regions in Spain. This evolution is due in large part to the work of the Navarra Viticulture and Enology Research Station, established by the regional government near Olite, to conduct research and training in the fields of viticulture and enology, and to contribute to the transformation of the DO into a wine producer in Spain. As a result, today Navarra produces red wine, rosé wine, white wine and Moscatels premium wines. Over the years Navarra winemaking has undergone changes which have completely changed the style of wine produced, the white and red wines produced in the region are second only to the rosé wines produced by the noble Grenacha variety, some of the white and red wines produced in Navarra in Spain are rated as the best!

Good Year 2018

DO Navarra classified the 2018 vintage as "muy buena" (very good). Both spring and summer vineyards have their complexities, but thanks to near-perfect weather in September, the grapes ripened well. As usual, the picking begins in the hotter Ribera Baja region, often with early-ripening white grapes. The total harvest was 78 million kilos, 30% more than in 2017.
