Opus One

The combination of the United States and France creates a cult classic

Opus One is a well-known winery located in Napa Valley, California, USA. It was founded in 1979 by the famous French winery Château Mouton Rothschild and California winemaker Robert Mondavi. The goal of this collaboration is to combine French and American winemaking traditions and techniques to create high-quality and unique wines. The core values of Opus One Winery are excellence and innovation. They believe that only by continually seeking excellence and researching ways to improve can the best wines be produced. To achieve this goal, Opus One Winery combines a vineyard philosophy that focuses on the diversity of soils and the influence of climate, with the skills and experience of its winemakers.

History

Opus One Winery was founded in 1979 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Baron Philippe from France was the owner of Chateau Mouton Rothschild at the time. It was through his unremitting efforts that Chateau Mouton was promoted from a Bordeaux second growth to a first growth in 1973, while Robert was a U.S. One of the most important pioneers in the history of California winemaking, he not only created the first Fume Blanc wine, but was also the first to introduce planting and brewing technologies such as high-density planting, temperature-controlled fermentation, and French oak barrel aging.

The duo decided to name their winery and wines using Latin-derived words so that both English and French speakers could understand them. The original name proposed by Baron Philippe was "Opus", a word that often appears in the names of classical music pieces and is used to indicate the sequence number of a certain composer's pieces. Soon after, the Baron suggested adding the word "One" after "Opus". So far, the name of the joint venture winery was determined to be Opus No. 1, and the name of its wine was also designated as Opus No. 1 red wine.

Vineyard

Opus One Winery currently has a total of 4 vineyards, with a total vineyard area of 68.8 hectares. In 1981, Robert sold the 14.2-hectare Q Block (Q Block) of Mondavi Winery's To-Kalon Vineyard to Works One Winery; two years later, the winery bought the 14.2-hectare Q Block. He purchased the 20.2-hectare River Parcel, and in the following year purchased the Ballestra Vineyard, which is adjacent to the River Parcel and has a similar area (19.8 hectares). In 2008, the winery acquired the 19.4-hectare K Block (K Block) of the Tucanon Garden from Mondavi Winery, further expanding the vineyard area.

Opus One Winery's vineyards are planted with a variety of grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The combination of these varieties gives Opus One wines rich layers and complexity. The vineyards are managed using sustainable agricultural methods, focusing on ecological balance and protecting the health of the soil.

Wine Making

In the brewing process, Opus One Winery uses a combination of traditional winemaking techniques and modern scientific methods. After harvesting the grapes, they carefully select only the best quality grapes for winemaking. They then use stainless steel and wooden barrels for fermentation and aging for a richer taste and flavor. There is great attention to detail and quality control at every step to ensure a quality wine.

Opus One focuses on the meticulous brewing process. They carefully select the best quality grapes after harvest and use stainless steel and wooden barrels for fermentation and aging. By combining traditional and modern winemaking techniques, Opus One produces wines with rich texture and unique flavor.

The free-run wine and pressed wine obtained after fermentation will be separately put into French oak barrels for aging, and part of the pressed wine will be used in the blend of Opus One dry red wine to give the wine a sense of structure. After about 18 months of barrel aging, the winery staff will use fresh egg whites to clarify the wine, and then bottle the wine. The bottled wine will be bottle-aged for another 18 months before it can be released on the market. It takes more than three years from the beginning of the grape harvest to the final release of the Opus One red wine of that vintage.

Products

Like many Bordeaux wineries, Chateau Opus One produces not only its first wine, but also its second wine. Its second-brand wine is called Opus One Overture dry red wine. The wine lives up to its name. Although the wine is not as complex and moving as the formal performance, it can already give a glimpse of the charm of the entire work.

Opus One Prelude dry red wine was born in 1993. It is made from grapes that have also been carefully selected but were not selected for blending with Opus One red wine. The wine made from these grapes will Aged longer in French oak barrels. Compared with the original wine, the biggest feature of the Overture dry red wine is that it is blended with wines from different years. Due to greater flexibility in brewing, the resulting wine is balanced, elegant and rich, while inheriting the alcoholic essence of the original brand. while also possessing a unique charm
