Vin de Constance is one of South Africa's most historic and acclaimed sweet wines, produced by Klein Constantia. This wine is considered one of the world's greatest sweet wines, famous for its long history, excellent quality and unique brewing process. Since its re-launch in 1986, Vin de Constance has been a flagship product of the South African wine industry, winning numerous international awards and being hailed as one of the world's finest sweet wines, and continues to attract collectors and wine lovers.
Vin de Constance dates back to the late 17th century, when Simon van der Stel, Governor of the Dutch East India Company in South Africa, established Constantia in the area of present-day Cape Town. The land was considered ideal for winemaking due to its cool climate and fertile soil. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the sweet wine produced in Constantia, known as Vin de Constance, became a sought-after wine by European royalty, nobility and artists. The wine enjoyed a high reputation in the European market and was even favored by historical figures such as Napoleon, the British poet Lord Byron and Charles Dickens.
Napoleon is said to have regularly ordered several cases of Vin de Constance each month as his last consolation while in exile on St. Helena. At the end of the 19th century, production at Constantia declined due to the Phylloxera epidemic and changes in the global market, and Vin de Constance was temporarily discontinued. It wasn't until the 1980s that the founders of the Klein Constantia (Little Constantia) winery rediscovered their passion for reviving this legendary sweet wine and, based on historical records, recreated the classic flavor of Vin de Constance.
Klein Constantia Winery is located in the Constantia Valley in Cape Town, South Africa, where the vineyards enjoy unique geographical and climatic conditions. The Constantia region is close to the Atlantic Ocean and is blown by cool sea breezes. This climatic condition prolongs the ripening period of the grapes, giving them higher acidity and richer flavors. The winery's vineyards are rooted in granite-derived soils, which have good drainage and help enhance the mineral flavor of the grapes.
Vin de Constance's winemaking process combines tradition with modern technology to ensure that each bottle of wine can show its unique sweetness and finesse. Main grape variety Muscat de Frontignan. The Muscat grapes used in Vin de Constance are known for their rich aroma and high sugar content, making them ideal for making sweet wines. These grapes are grown on the hillsides of the Klein Constantia winery, where the region's cool maritime climate and granite soil provide excellent ripening conditions for the grapes.
Vin de Constance is made by picking grapes in batches to ensure that each bunch is harvested at the best maturity. This preserves the natural acidity and balance of the grapes. The grapes are slightly dried on the vines (part of which is naturally dried on the branches), which concentrates the sugars of the grapes while retaining rich aromas and acidity. After pressing, the grapes are fermented slowly at low temperatures, which maximizes the aromatic characteristics of the grapes. The fermentation process lasts for several months to ensure the perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, stainless steel barrels and large oak barrels for about 3 to 4 years. This mixed aging method gives the wine a complex layered taste while avoiding excessive oak flavors that overwhelm the aroma of the grapes themselves. Vin de Constance has a high potential for aging in bottles, and many vintages can still maintain their vitality and flavor after decades.
Style-wise, Vin de Constance dessert wines often exude rich aromas of dried fruits, candied orange peel, honey, almonds and musk, with a hint of floral and spice. The wine is full-bodied and balanced, with a perfect combination of sweet fruit and lively acidity, and a long finish with subtle aftertastes of honey and citrus.
