Virginie de Valandraud Blanc

St-Emilion First Growth’s first-class white wine

Virginie de Valandraud Blanc is a second-brand dry white wine from the famous Saint-Emilion garage winery Chateau Valandraud. The winery is also a St-Emilion Grand Cru Classe B - First Growth. Many wine lovers don't quite understand the meaning of garage wine. Garage wine originated in the Bordeaux region of France. It refers to some small wineries that cannot afford the high site costs and choose cellars or garages as the brewing site. The wine brewed is called "garage wine". Today, garage wine has evolved into a synonym for small wineries, small production, good quality and high prices.

The label of this second-label dry white wine is named after the owner's daughter, Virginie. In 2000, the winery decided to open a new vineyard near the first-label vineyard to plant white grape varieties, and this second-label dry white wine came into being. The second-label wine shares the same brewing team and brewing technology as the first-label wine, and the brewing standards are equally strict. It has the charm of the first-label wine, but the taste is more approachable, the drinking period is often earlier, and the price is more cost-effective.

It is worth mentioning that Bordeaux dry white wine only accounts for 7-10% of the total output of Bordeaux wine. Most of them are blended or brewed with Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. There are refreshing dry white wines with floral and fruity aromas and affordable prices, as well as dry white wines with smooth texture, rich aroma and outstanding aging potential. The latter usually uses a certain proportion of oak barrels and has long contact with the lees, which is quite complex and layered. The quantity is small and the price is high. Nowadays, Bordeaux dry white wine is becoming more and more popular in the market.

Virginie de Valandraud Blanc 2018

Region: France/Bordeaux

Grape varieties: 50% Semillon, 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Sauvignon Gris

Alcohol content: 13.5%

Characteristics: Combining tradition and modernity in the winemaking process. After the grapes are picked, they are screened first, and only the most mature grapes can be used for winemaking. The grapes were then put into two open winemaking vessels for fermentation, then into oak barrels for malolactic fermentation, and finally into oak barrels for 18 months of aging. The oak barrels used are all new and replaced every 9 months.

2018 - Outstanding Vintage

Wine Searcher’s 2018 Saint-Emilion annual report noted that it was an excellent vintage. Wine Searcher added that the 2018 Saint-Emilion was tricky in places (regarding yields), but still produced some very good wines. The growing season began with a mild winter, but spring brought heavy rainfall, reducing winery production. However, the summers were hot and dry, and they cleared away any lingering rot, leaving an intact water table in the soil that became a critical resource for keeping the vines hydrated. High temperatures contribute to the ripening of grape phenolic compounds. The wines can have rich fruit flavors and relatively high alcohol content, age well, and are suitable for early drinking.
