Astrolabe Marlborough Pinot Noir 2020

The name “Astrolabe” is derived from the name of the ship in which Dumont d'Urville discovered Marlborough in 1827, “L'Astrolabe”, which means the astrolabe, a well known navigational instrument. Astrolabe', which means astrolabe, is a well known navigational tool. Owner Simon Waghorn named the winery “Astrolabe” to link it to the history of Marlborough and to embrace the spirit of adventure.

Simon Waghorn, the man at the heart of Stellar Plate, began his winemaking career in South Australia, then moved to Gisborne to work on the East Coast of New Zealand, before taking on the role of Winemaker at Whitehaven Winery in Marlborough, where he was born. Starting in 1996, he and his wife, Paul Davonport and Sally Lewis decided to start their own winery together and established Astrolabe Winery.

Marlborough Pinot Noir

Marlborough produces wines with sharp textures and intense aromas. Sauvignon Blanc is the region’s (and New Zealand’s) signature wine with its explosive tropical fruit, green herbal notes and punchy acidity, but other grape varieties thrive in this wine haven.
Pinot Noir has also taken root in Marlborough and made its mark on the New Zealand stage. Marlborough Pinot Noir showcases the region’s pure fruit with additional layers of minerality and exotic spices. Southern Valleys produce Pinot Noirs that are full-bodied with spicy depth, while Awatere’s river gravels produce vibrant, savory, herbaceous Pinots. Underlying this diverse region’s culture is a collection of Pinots that combine power and elegance.
