Cardhu 18-year-old whisky is a whisky with a longer age. The 18-year aging in the barrel adds a richer and more complex aroma. While continuing the gentle and easy-drinking style of Cardhu, it adds a rich aroma of fruit, leather and chocolate.

Cardhu is located near Archiestown in the Speyside region of Scotland, UK. Cardhu means "Black Rock" in Gaelic. It is now a Scotch whisky brand under Diageo. The whisky brewed by Cardhu is an important part of Johnnie Walker blended whisky.



The history of Cardhu is closely related to two women. In 1811, Helen Cumming and her husband John Cumming rented a farm in Cardow and, like other farmers, began small-scale whisky production. However, in 1816, John was convicted of illegal distillation three times for not having an official license, but the real distiller was his wife Helen. In 1823, the Excise Act reduced taxes, and peasant-class distillers could finally afford to buy distilling licenses. Cardhu was one of the first distilleries to have a license. In addition, Cardhu also purchased new stills and sold whisky with the help of George Smith, the founder of Glenlivet.


In 1832, John's son Lewis Cumming took over the distillery. Although Cardhu was small in scale, Lewis's careful management earned Cardhu an excellent reputation. In 1846, John died, and Lewis continued to be responsible for the operation of the farm and distillery. After that, he hired two workers, one for malting barley and the other for distilling whiskey. In 1872, Lewis died, and the distillery was managed by his wife Elizabeth Cumming and two young sons. Elizabeth registered Car-Dhu as a trademark and achieved great success.


In 1884, demand for Speyside malt whisky grew rapidly, and Cardhu's production fell far short of what was needed, so Cardhu bought land near the farm to build a new distillery, New Cardow. The distillery used the same water source as the old distillery, but had three times the production capacity of the original distillery. In 1893, Elizabeth made a very important decision: she sold Cardhu to John Walker & Sons and bought 100 shares in the company for her son. A year later, Elizabeth died. In 1898, thanks to Elizabeth's wise choice, Cardhu survived the crisis of the whisky market crash under the protection of Walker & Sons.


In 1899, Cardhu's stills increased to four, and a new road, partly funded by Walker & Sons, connected Cardhu to the Strathspey Railway. In 1914, William Fraser was appointed manager of the distillery. In 1917, the distillery stopped production due to the First World War, and reopened two years later. In the following years, the distillery continued to purchase new equipment and develop different styles of whiskey. In 1923, Walker & Sons successfully listed on the stock market, and two years later merged with other companies to become The Distillers Company Ltd. In 1960, as the demand for whiskey continued to increase after the war, Cardhu was expanded. In 1965, the distillery registered "Cardhu" as a trademark and re-launched single malt whiskey. To this day, Cardhu has become one of Speyside's most famous distilleries under the management of Cardhu Diageo.


In order to ensure the output of whiskey, Cardhu has been running non-stop 7 days a week since 2015. The water used to produce whiskey comes from the wells of Mannoch Hills and Lyne Burn. Cardhu has 10 fermentation barrels made of three materials, 4 of which are made of Scottish Lark, 4 of Douglas Fir, and the remaining 2 are made of stainless steel. In addition, Cardhu also has 3 sets of distillers, which are the core of Cardhu's whiskey production. Cardhu has its own warehouse, but most of the whiskey is stored in Diageo's central warehouse.
