Pape Clement is a veritable old-established estate, with records of grape cultivation dating back to 1252. It gained its name after being purchased in 1300 by Bertrand de Goth, who later became Pope Clement V. Its modern era of splendour commenced in 1939 when acquired by Paul Montagne!
Under Paul's restoration, the estate swiftly regained its former high standards, securing its place as a classified growth in the Graves appellation by 1959. Its ascent to prominence was cemented in 1980 when Bernard Magrez acquired the entire estate from his wife, becoming its defining figure. Bernard is now a heavyweight figure in Bordeaux and the wider wine world, owning some 42 estates across nine countries, including four Bordeaux classified growths. The strongest among them is undoubtedly this Pape Clément.
In 1993, he brought in Michel Rolland, one of the most renowned winemaking consultants. Beyond consistently high scores from major critics, the 2009 Pape Clement Blanc achieved perfect 100-point ratings from both James Suckling and Robert Parker, cementing its status as one of Bordeaux's finest white wines! Incidentally, the wine also holds dual environmental certifications: Terra Vitis and HVE3 Label. Need I say more?
