Domaine de Chevalier is located in Pessac-Leognan, the northern part of the Graves region, which became its own AOC in 1987. Domaine de Chevalier was classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves in the Classification of the Graves in 1953. Domaine de Chevalier was classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves in the 1953 Classification of the Graves, which separates red and white wines, but Domaine de Chevalier was awarded Grands CrusClassés for both red and white wines. Only 14 wineries have achieved this.
The history of the Domaine de Chevalier is long, documented in the 17th century, and detailed in 1865 when Jean Ricard started planting grapes and is considered the founder of the Domaine. His son-in-law, Gabriel Beaumartin, managed the Domaine for 40 years until 1983 when the Bernard Family purchased the Domaine. The estate has had only three owners, the current owner being Olivier Bernard.

The Bernard Family, a leading family in the spirits market and an important wine merchant for Bordeaux's prestigious wines, started out with Domaine de Chevalier in 1993, and in 2009, Olivier Bernard was asked to manage Domaine de la Solitude. In 2009, Olivier Bernard was asked to manage Château Lespault-Martillac, also in Paccac-Leognan, which was not doing well at the time. The owner wanted Olivier Bernard to help improve the estate, and he has done just that. In 2006, the Bernard family became one of the shareholders of Château Guiraud, which is the 1855 Grand Cru classé of Sauternes, and which has undoubtedly brought the family to the next level.
In 2011, Olivier Bernard embarked on an ambitious project, Clos des Lunes, to produce dry white wines of outstanding quality in the Sauternes region, known for its sweet noble rot.
