ZTF144A - Gustave Lorentz Riesling Alsace Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim Vieilles Vignes 2020
$338/btl

Gustave Lorentz Winery is one of the three internationally renowned wineries in Alsace with a long history. Founded in 1836, it has a long history of more than 180 years and has been passed down to the seventh generation of the family. The winery is located in Bergheim, Alsace, France, and owns more than 33 hectares of its own vineyards, including the Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru and the Grand Cru in Kanzlerberg.
The winery is currently managed by the seventh generation Georges Lorentz. Recognizing current and future environmental challenges, he switched to organic farming in 2009. Since 2012, all of their own vineyards have been certified organic. Although the winery is large in scale, it still insists on manual harvesting. It is worth mentioning that in 1983, the Alsace region began to define the best vineyards as "Grand Cru", which brought the quality of its wine to a higher level. The more obvious global warming in the past decade has also caused more changes in the wines of this region. The wines produced by the winery are often used by famous airlines (Air France, Japan Airlines, Emirates Airlines) as first-class wines.

The Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru is located in the north of the town of Bergheim. It is an excellent plot of Riesling and Gewurztraminer, and is one of the only two Grand Cru vineyards in Alsace that allows mixed varieties and blended brews. "Altenberg" means "old mountain" in the Alsatian dialect. The age of the vines in this vineyard of Gustave Lorentz is 35-50 years, so they are "old vines" (Vieilles Vignes). The clay-limestone-based soil, the south-facing orientation, the 220-320-meter steep slopes and the mountain streams all create a mild climate, which is an ideal growing environment for high-quality grapes.
