There is a tradition in the Hennessy family that each generation of family heirs must brew a Cognac to entertain relatives and friends. When the third generation of the family, Maurice Hennessy, brewed a private wine in 1870, he used it to serve himself at home and entertain relatives and friends. But later he discovered that many guests who had tasted this wine missed the mellow aroma of this wine very much after leaving, and wrote to Morris one after another, hoping to buy this wine on the market. So Morris named it XO, which means "special aging", and put it on the market in 1872. It was by chance and necessity that Hennessy XO came out. It was widely circulated and highly praised. In 1872, it even traveled across the ocean to as far away as the United States.
