【The Terroir of IL POGGIONE Winery】
TENUTA IL POGGIONE is located in the town of Sant'Angelo, approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of MONTALCINO.
Benefiting from its exceptional location, its vineyards—including the VIGNA PAGANELLI established in 1964—enjoy outstanding terroir due to the proximity of Mount Amiata and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The vineyards range in elevation from 150 to 450 meters (490 – 1475 feet).
Combined with the age of the vines, this facilitates easier harvesting and produces structured wines with great aging potential, regardless of climatic conditions.
【The Pioneer of Brunello di Montalcino】
Brunello is the prince of Montalcino wines, crafted entirely from Sangiovese grapes. These grapes are handpicked from the oldest vines in the vineyard. Fermented under temperature control, Tenuta Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is then aged in large French oak barrels. Following barrel aging, the wine undergoes bottle aging: a crucial process ensuring Brunello di Montalcino's global renown.
Teunta Il Poggione stands alongside Biondi Sant and Frescobaldi as a pioneering estate in the early days of Brunello di Montalcino production, situated in the village of Sant'Angelo in Colle, south of Montalcino. Its history traces back to 1890 when Lavinio Franceschi arrived in Montalcino. Captivated by the local landscape, he purchased land to establish a farm. The estate spans 530 hectares at elevations ranging from 150 to 450 meters. Of this, 140 hectares are dedicated to vineyards, 50 hectares to olive groves, with the remainder used for other crops or livestock. As early as the 1900s, Tenuta Il Poggione began producing Brunello di Montalcino, becoming one of the pioneering estates in this designation. The vineyards are managed sustainably, with controlled yields and enhanced fruit ripeness. Aging occurs in large French oak barrels. Diverse crops are intercropped within the vineyards, and chemical fertilizers are avoided, reflecting a deep respect for nature. The estate utilizes Sangiovese clones selected from historic vineyards, characterized by sparse foliage and thick skins. These clones consistently produce high-quality fruit across both excellent and challenging vintages. Yielding captivating, delicious, and high-caliber Brunello di Montalcino. Successors Leopoldo and Livia continue their predecessors' winemaking passion, tirelessly developing the estate by blending ancient winemaking craftsmanship and traditional techniques with the latest equipment and technology. Even the winemakers are father and son, Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci. Il Poggione consistently delivers stable, reasonably priced wines that achieve high scores at affordable prices. No wonder they are so beloved and sought after by wine enthusiasts.
【History】
Lavinio Franceschi from Florence visited the region. He fell in love with the picturesque Montalcino area and its people, ultimately deciding to purchase land and establish a farm.
Over generations, significant resources were dedicated to quality control, vine propagation and clonal selection, winemaking and aging techniques, and the construction of a modern winery meeting contemporary standards. Il Poggione began selling Brunello di Montalcino as early as the 1900s and was a founding member of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium.
Over a century later, Lavinio Franceschi's legacy was carried forward by his successors, Leopoldo and Livia, who continued to develop the business with the same dedication and unwavering passion. They skillfully blended ancient winemaking traditions and techniques with the latest, most innovative technologies.
