Johnnie Walker, also known as ‘John Walker’, originated from the town of Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. Founded in 1820, Johnnie Walker is now Diageo's Scotch whisky brand. Johnnie Walker Zuni is named after a farm boy called John Walker, whose father died in 1819, the same year he opened a grocery shop in the town of Kilmarnock. John blended the whisky to give it consistency and sold it under the trade name “Walker's Kilmarnock Whisky”, which was a great success. 1857 saw John's death and the lucrative estate passed to his son, Alexander Walker. In 1909, Alexander's sons, Alexander II and George, renamed their wines and decided to use a colour range of labels, resulting in the Red Label and Black Label. At the same time, they adopted the logo designed by illustrator Tom Browne, the “Walking Gentleman”, a small man with spectacles, hat and cane, knee-length trousers, overalls and a resemblance to the founder, John Walker, walking to the right. As Zuni continued to evolve, so too did the figurines on the logo: the figures became simpler, as did the details of the clothing. The longer the bottle was bottled, the clearer and more specific the face of the logo became. From then on, it became ‘Johnnie Walker’, the gentlemanly image of Edward Era. This image represents Johnnie Walker's pursuit of high quality, as stated in Johnnie Walker's brand philosophy ‘Keep Walking’: ‘Keep walking, never give up.’ On 1 January 1934, Johnnie Walker received the Royal Warrant of Approval from King George V, making it the whisky of the Royal Household to this day.
