Kuroryu Brewery is located in Fukui Prefecture in the Hokuriku region of central Japan. Founded in 1804 as "Ishidaya," it was officially renamed "Kuroryu Brewery" in 1948. The name Kuroryu comes from a nearby river, the "Kuzuryu River." Mount Hakusan in Fukui Prefecture is one of Japan's three sacred mountains. Meltwater from the mountain flows through the mountain streams, creating soft, exceptionally clear water. This river flows through the center of Fukui Prefecture and is called the "Kuzuryu River." The shrine guarding the Kuzuryu River is called "Kuroryu Shrine," hence the name "Kuroryu" (Black Dragon). The brewery's two main brewing lines are named "Kuzuryu" and "Kuroryu."
Furthermore, Kuroryu Brewery places great emphasis on its raw materials. Kuroryu Brewery, together with 11 other breweries, forms "Frontier Tojo 21," dedicated to using Yamada Nishiki sake from the Tojo region to brew the highest quality Japanese sake. They also use premium Gohyakumangoku sake grown in cooperative farms in Ono Ward, Fukui Prefecture.
The current president is Naoto Mizuno, who joined the brewery in 1990 and became president in 2005, serving as its eighth president. Since joining, Mr. Mizuno has focused on integrating the brewery's products, aiming to produce sake that prioritizes quality over quantity, ensuring that quality is not compromised simply to meet production targets. The current Emperor Naruhito of Japan is a fan of Kurokyu Brewery. He prefers to purchase Kurokyu sake himself from the market, rather than accepting so-called "special supplies" from the brewery. This allows him to experience the brewery's products more authentically, rather than enjoying what he perceives as "special supplies," demonstrating the Emperor's genuine appreciation for Kurokyu Brewery's offerings.
