Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is located in Chateauuneuf du Pape in the southern Rhone Valley. Founded in 1905, the winery covers 20 hectares across three vineyards: les Trois Sources, les Hauts-lieux, and lieu-dit Clavin. Initially, it was an obscure family winery, primarily selling its grapes to others before 1960. Bottled grapes began in the 1960s, but these were mainly distributed to family and close friends and did not officially enter the market.

The winery is located in a region with a typical Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The soil is primarily composed of large, rounded pebbles and sandy red clay. The main red grape varieties planted are Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdr, and Counoise, with smaller quantities of the less common Muscardin and Vaccarese. White grape varieties include Marsanne and Roussanne. All grapes are hand-harvested, and only the ripest, full-bodied grapes are used for natural fermentation. Chateauneuf du Pape is the winery's flagship red wine, possessing considerable aging potential. The winery also produces Cote-du-Rough leu-dit Calvin and Cote-du-Rough Blanc leu-dit Calvin.

In 1990, under the current owner Jean-Paul Daumen, the winery underwent a transformation. He adopted a Burgundian approach, subdividing his vineyards and employing the most suitable planting and harvesting methods based on the terroir of each plot, combining organic farming with biodynamic practices (Demeter certified). In winemaking, Jean-Paul Daumen uses traditional methods, cultivating natural yeasts in large cement tanks, without adding sulfur dioxide, clarifying, or filtering, to showcase the uniqueness of the terroir and the characteristics of different vintages.
Released in 1994, Châteauneuuf-du-Pape caught the eye of Robert Parker, who consistently produced exceptional wines. Parker praised the winery highly, awarding perfect scores to the three vintages of Châteauneuuf-du-Pape Reserve (2001, 2003, and 2005). From initial obscurity to later prominence, this rise was not a matter of luck. The decisive changes brought by the new management, coupled with shifts in the natural environment, propelled Vieille Julienne to become a burgeoning and highly sought-after winery in Châteauneuuf-du-Pape.
