Tasting notes: Robert Parker: Bizarre as it may sound, the 2010 Les Forts de Latour is also the finest I have ever tasted from this selection, which comes from specific vineyards, not really so much a second wine as just another wine from estate holdings. A blend of 72.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27.5% Merlot that represents 40% of the production, this astonishing wine hit 14.3% natural alcohol. Extremely ripe and rich, it reminds me of the 1982 on steroids (and that wine is still drinking great 30 years after the vintage). Sensational notes of graphite, crushed rocks, black fruits, camphor and damp forest notes are present in this expansive, savory, full-throttle wine, which is better than many vintages of the great Latour itself from the past. (That may be a heretical statement, but it's the truth as I see it.) This wine needs a good 5-6 years of cellaring and should age for three decades at minimum, given the fact that the 1982 is in terrific form and wasn't this concentrated or prodigious.

1855 Classified Grand Cru Graded First Class Châteaux

Chateau Latour is located in the Pauillac production area and is one of the five 1855 first growths.

The winery has a long history, dating back to the 14th century. In 1331, during the Hundred Years' War between England and France, approval was given to build defensive towers on the banks of the Gironde River to protect the mouth of the river from attack. Chateau Latour was later named after the defensive tower that once stood on the southeast side of the estate, although it was completely destroyed by the French kings a century later. The current dovecote on the estate, often mistaken for the original defense tower, was actually built with stones from the razed defense tower.

Until the end of the 16th century, Chateau Latour was jointly owned by two lords. At that time, Chateau Latour leased land to farmers, who had to pay taxes to both owners. By the end of the 17th century, the winery was in the hands of the Mullet family. Although the agricultural rental system was gradually replaced by direct management, the grape planting area did not expand as a result. Later, through marriage and inheritance, the winery was passed to Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Segur (who also owned Lafite Rothschild), who was known as the Prince of Vineyards. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the division of inheritance and the outbreak of the French Revolution dispersed the ownership of wineries among family members and outside parties. Despite this instability, it had little impact on the quality of wine production. It was rated as a Premier Grand Cru Classe in the 1855 classification system, and is as famous as Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Margaux and Chateau Haut-Brion.

Les Forts de Latour is the second-label wine of the winery. It was first launched under this name in 1966. The quality of its wine is comparable to that of a fourth-level winery. In fact, the winemaking team of Chateau Latour insists on maintaining this second-level wine as a second-level wine. The quality and attitude of a first-class winery make it possible to produce Les Forts de Latour in some excellent vintages, such as 1982, 1996, and 2000, which can be said to have the qualities of a second-class winery. It is no wonder that its price is among the top five wineries. The second wine ranks among the best.

The grapes for this second-ranked wine come from four vineyards: Petit Batailley, Comtesse de Lalande, Les Forts de Latour and Latour vineyard (some younger or have not yet reached first-class grape vines), and the wine produced is very close to the genuine brand. In itself, the significant difference is only the proportion of new barrels used during aging (50% - 60%), and the use of more Merlot (25% - 30%). Compared with the original wine, the body is lighter and earlier mature, but it still needs It matures after several years of aging. Les Forts de Latour can be said to be the best quality second wine among the five major wineries.
