Chateau Desmirail is located in the village of Cantenac in the Margaux region. In the mid-17th century, Château de Mesures de Rauzan was part of the Pierre de Mesures de Rauzan estate. As time went by, the manor was divided into multiple parts. By the 1855 classification, the original Rauzan Manor had been divided into Chateau Rauzan-Gassies, Chateau Rauzan-Ségla, and Chateau Desmirail. (Desme Manor) and Chateau Marquis de Terme (Deda Marquis Manor) four manor houses. In 1855, Chateau Desme was rated as a third growth. In 1905, the famous composer Mendelssohn became the owner of the estate. Later, the Manor of Desme was purchased by Lucien Lurton. The Lurton family were well-known wine producers. Lucien spent 20 years rebuilding the Desme Manor, renovating the vineyards in the original manor piece by piece. He then bought a building in the village of Cantenac and converted it into a wine cellar. The first harvest was in 1981. In 1992, Lucien’s son Denis Lurton, 33, inherited Manor Desme from his father and is also the current owner. Denis Lurton has inherited the brewing skills of his father and family for many years, and has always aimed to produce high-quality wine. The winery’s official wine has received more than 90 points in the Vintages in recent years from James Suckling, and the quality of the wine is beyond doubt.
The vineyards are managed sustainably and the use of chemicals is strictly controlled to promote healthy soil development while better preserving the character of the terroir. The grapes are harvested manually by a team of 60 people, and then transported to the fermentation room for destemming, screening and crushing. Different fermentation tanks are separated according to different plots for fermentation. This helps the wine express the characteristics of different plots and different grape varieties. For different ages of trees, different containers are used for fermentation. Owner Denis LURTON, technical director Pierre Lafeuillade and legendary winemaking consultant Jacques Boissenot work together to select suitable containers for fermentation and aging. Old vines often use oak barrels for fermentation. It is then aged for 12 months in no less than 30% new oak barrels. About every 3 months, the winemaker will decan the wine to clarify the wine. After maturation is complete, the wine is transferred to large oak barrels and clarified with egg whites.
