From the renowned Champagne Pierre Gimonnet estate in France's Champagne region, carrying over 200 years of viticultural expertise, the Gimonnet family stands as an indispensable presence in Champagne. Renowned for crafting Champagne exclusively from 100% Chardonnay grapes, All grapes are sourced from the renowned Blanc de Blancs vineyards across Champagne, establishing Gimonnet as the quintessential RM (Récoltant Manipulant) Blanc de Blancs—a 100% white grape blend primarily composed of Chardonnay.

RM (Récoltant Manipulant) refers to quality-focused, self-produced and self-distributed Champagne houses. Most of the “small-producer Champagnes” we hear about fall under the RM category, and the Pierre Gimonnet family stands as a leader among these RM Champagnes!

The Gimonnet family estate was founded in 1750 and has cultivated the village of Cuis in the Côte des Blancs for centuries. Initially, they sold their grapes to renowned Champagne houses in the region. It wasn't until 1955, the father of current owner Didier transformed the estate into an independent bottling RM (Récoltant Manipulant), dedicating himself to studying and vinifying distinct parcels with unique characteristics. Through accumulated experience, they deepened their understanding of the vineyards, elevated grape quality, and refined the wines' character, establishing an exceptional reputation and standing in the region. Under the stewardship of the next generation, Didier and Olivier, the wines' quality and international renown have reached unprecedented heights.

Region

Although one of the largest RM growers in the Côte des Blancs, owning 28 hectares of vineyards (along with 170 hectares of wheat and barley), the Gimonnet family has always prioritized quality over quantity. They exclusively use 100% Chardonnay from the finest plots within the Côte des Blancs to craft their Champagne, truly masters of Blanc de Blancs champagne.

In their vineyard philosophy, the estate embraces the Burgundian practice of dividing plots into distinct Lieux-Dits. Within their 28 hectares, 14 hectares comprise Premier Cru vineyards in Cuis, Additionally, 12 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards are located in Cramant and Chouilly. Most cuvées are crafted from selections of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, showcasing exceptional terroir expression.

Years of accumulation have resulted in over half of the Gimonnet family vineyards being planted with vines over 30 years old. Furthermore, some vines in Cramant's Le Fond du Bateau (planted in 1911) and Buisson (planted in 1913) have surpassed a century of age.

Due to terroir considerations, the Champagne region places exceptionally high demands on vintage quality, which explains the distinction between vintage and non-vintage Champagnes. Didier Gimonnet firmly believes in quality above all else. He favors blending Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards to elevate overall quality while maintaining relatively reasonable pricing. Should the harvested grapes fail to meet the estate's exacting standards in a given year, they will forgo producing a vintage champagne altogether—a decision requiring immense courage and masterful technique.

It is perhaps this very uncompromising pursuit of perfection that gives Pierre Gimonnet the confidence to stand out among “small-producer champagnes,” becoming a cultural legacy the estate takes pride in. Ninety-five percent of their vineyards are planted with Chardonnay. Some say Pierre Gimonnet embodies the style of the northern Côte des Blancs, much like Pierre Peters represents the southern style.

Winemaking

Didier's winemaking philosophy is straightforward: Separate plots with distinct styles are processed individually, undergoing malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks of varying sizes. This approach clearly defines the style corresponding to each terroir. Later, crafting any desired wine style simply involves blending specific cuvées of base wines based on experience. This method opens up infinite stylistic possibilities while preserving the unique characteristics of the terroir. To me, it's like a painter using different pigments on a canvas.

Another distinctive point is Didier's preference for storing base wines in large bottles rather than stainless steel tanks. During the annual NV blending, he uses approximately 60-70% of base wines from recent vintages. He believes this method maximizes the freshness of the wine's body and palate, as well as its aging potential. Winemaking is an art, and every winemaker is a visionary artist.

Primarily composed of old vines from the Chouilly Grand Cru, it blends the finesse of Cramant, the minerality of Oger, and the acidity of Cuis. Wine Spectator has hailed it as “one of the finest Fleurons ever produced.”
