Winery

Jean-Marie Guffens is a winemaker who has elevated the lesser-known white wines of Macon to the level of other top-tier white wine appellations. His Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon was once recommended by the comic book "Water Drop." Amidst the exorbitant prices of Burgundy white wines, Verget proves that Burgundy still offers affordable, authentic options.
Region

Because the vineyard's Climat name, Le Cote Rotie, is similar to Cote Rotie in the Rhône, Jean-Marie Guffens used Lieu (Inter)dit, meaning "Forbidden place," to avoid confusion. Although Masion Verget is a negociant, it's led by Jean-Marie Guffens, known as the "Master in the Art of Chardonnay," that distinguishes it from other negociants. He personally inspects the vineyards of his contracted growers to ensure viticulture practices and quality meet their standards. He prioritizes vineyard locations, adheres to low yields, and prioritizes older vines, ensuring the quality of his white wines is never a concern for wine lovers.
Winemaking

This blend is a combination of grapes from two Climat parcels, Le Cote Rotie and Les Terres Noires. Les Terres Noires, with its old vines, provides richness, while Le Cote Rotie's terroir lends a fine minerality. Using only freerun juice, this wine is intense and focused. Aged for seven months in oak barrels, it offers notes of lemon, pineapple, and passion fruit, with notes of ripe tropical fruit from Chassagne Montrachet, the buttery Cremay of Mesurault, the delicate acidity of Puligny Montrachet, and the minerality of Chablis.

The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Crays ler Cru has a backward, stony bouquet,a bit recalcitrant at the moment.Apparently, the vines suffered block maturation for 15 days in August when nothing happened. The palate is fresh thanks to a healthy addition of lees, fine weight, touches of stem ginger and lemongrass with a resinous finish. This is a difficult cuvée to pin down, though that makes it intriguing to taste.
