The prestigious 2006 La Grande Dame is made from 47% Chardonnay and 53% Pinot Noir, and assembles the fruit of eight grand cru villages. Very intense and complex on the nose, this is a full-bodied, round, rich and mouth-filling, but also refined prestige cuvée; it reveals a fascinating purity, precision and freshness. The finish is long and complex, and shows a spicy minerality. There are coffee beans, bread and toast aromas in the aftertaste. This comes highly recommended.

The Grande Dame is looking bright, gently complex and a little spicy in 2006 where the grapefruit citrus is a strong influence on the nose, showing sweet florals, a little honeyed nougat and almond paste. The palate's bright and crisp and really has an air of fleshy depth and refinement. There's also a great warm, toasty finish that displays grilled hazelnuts.

Veuve Clicquot is one of the most famous producers of Champagne and has been a bestseller since its inception in 1772. In 1814, at the end of the Napoleonic Wars and at a crucial moment in the confrontation between Russia and France, Madame Veuve Clicquot took the risk of shipping 10,550 bottles of 1811 Champagne to Russia, where it became a huge success. In the following years, Veuve Clicquot became one of the most famous brands in the world, and the supply of Champagne became so high that Madame Clicquot was honoured as the ‘Champagne of Champagne’. In the years that followed, Champagne became one of the most famous brands in the world, and the demand for it grew to such a high level that Madame Caigle was honoured as the ‘Great Lady of Champagne’.

The modern Veuve Clicquot Maison has one of the finest Champagne vineyards, both in terms of its size and the quality of its vines. Its 390 hectares are divided into 12 of the 17 Premier Cru Classés and 20 of the 44 Premier Cru Classés that make up the entire Champagne region. 95 per cent of the Veuve Clicquot vines are classified as either Premier Cru Classés or Premier Cru Classés, with the latter accounting for only a quarter of the total vine area in the Champagne region. Each parcel's grape varieties are determined by evaluating its soils, climate, and exposure, and Veuve Clicquot vineyards are comprised of 47% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir, and 17% Pinot Meunier, with most of the Clicquot vines on gentle slopes, which allows the vines to benefit from shallow soils and maximum exposure to sunlight. Since its inception,
the Veuve Clicquot brand has also developed strong partnerships with winegrowers in the Champagne region. These grape suppliers help to ensure that the quality of Veuve Clicquot wines remains consistent.
