Winery

Yalumba Winery was founded in 1849 when Samuel Smith planted its first grapevine. Now in its sixth generation of family winemaking, it is located in Australia's most renowned wine region, the Barossa Valley. Yalumba stands as one of Australia's oldest, largest, and most prestigious family-owned enterprises. Originally a British brewer, Samuel Smith immigrated to Australia where he and his son purchased land to cultivate grapes, naming it Yalumba—meaning “all the land around” in English. The estate has remained in the Smith family ever since.

After over 170 years of dedication, Yalumba has achieved considerable scale and renown. Robert Hill Smith, the fifth-generation owner, describes the estate's enduring purpose as not only a commitment to its heritage but also a passionate pursuit of the future. This fully illustrates Yalumba's mission to honor its heritage while forging ahead. Robert Hill Smith began working in Yalumba's cellars and vineyards in 1970, later joining the sales and marketing department where he oversaw exports and developed the company's international strategy. In 1983, he was appointed Head of Marketing and soon began championing the pursuit of new, premium wines for this family enterprise. Several years later, Robert Hill Smith and his brother Sam secured the Smith family's controlling stake in the winery and steered it toward a future-focused direction. Today, Yalumba stands as a premier winery that has set multiple world records.

Region

Menzies Estate Vineyard sits at the heart of Coonawarra, blessed with renowned Terra Rossa red soil and limestone. The Terra Rossa provides exceptional drainage, perfectly suited to Coonawarra's maritime climate. The limestone base prevents grape roots from penetrating too deeply to absorb excess moisture, while the slightly alkaline environment limits nutrient uptake, encouraging lower yields and greater concentration. This makes Coonawarra exceptionally suited for Cabernet Sauvignon—excellent drainage and sea breezes extend ripening periods, imparting distinctive eucalyptus notes and a distinct maritime character.

Winemaking

The name “The Cigar” comes from the fact that the red soil area looks cigar-shaped on the map. Beyond the characteristics imparted by the red soil, the wine genuinely carries a hint of cigar aroma. Notably, Yalumba is the only winery in the Southern Hemisphere and one of only four globally to operate its own cooperage. The wine is aged for 21 months using a blend of 20% new French hogsheads and barriques, one-year-old French hogsheads and barriques, plus even older French barrels. One glance reveals the pinnacle of in-house barrel-making!
