Characteristics: The grapes are harvested by hand. After harvesting, the grapes are sorted in the fermentation room, destemmed and then gently pressed. The grapes from the different plots are fermented in a number of vats of different sizes. After a few days of maceration, alcoholic fermentation begins. After two weeks of alcoholic fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in large barrels for the aleuric wines and in small oak barrels for the pressed wines. Barrel ageing was carried out in 55% new barrels and 45% old barrels from the previous vintage, and lasted about 18 months.

Flavor: 
This Triple Chateau Grand Cru is full of aromatic flavors of black cherries and dark berries, with a vanilla sweetness from the oak. The tannins are powerful and full-bodied, but thanks to the use of a higher percentage of Petit Verdot in the blend, it does not lose its fresh and delicate personality and has the potential to age well.In 2015, the sunny days and cool nights in the region provided excellent conditions for full ripening of the grapes and more fragrant aromas.


Classified as a third growth in the Haut-Médoc in 1855, the estate was managed by the Seze family for several generations from the 1700's onwards, then in 1962 due to economic problems it was transferred to the Ducellier family, who owned Château Ayala in Champagne, and then in 2000 both estates were sold to the Frey family, the current owners of which come from a Swiss financial group. The Frey family, now owners of the Swiss financial group, also bought Jaboulet, a wine estate on the Rhone. In 2004, Caroline Frey, her daughter with a degree in winemaking from Bordeaux, took over the winemaking of Chateau La Lagune, and under Caroline's leadership, the reputation and quality of the winery has reached new heights. The vineyard currently covers 82 hectares on alluvial and mineral-rich soils on a south-facing gravelly hill covered with well-drained white pebbles, which reflect the sun's rays on the fruit - aiding ripening. The estate is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. La Lagune breaks away from the usual Haut Medoc style and favors a more feminine interpretation, with fresh fruit, not bold, but more like a Margaux. This is showing aromas of black currants, dried herbs, paprika, orange zest and tobacco leaves. It’s medium-bodied with fine-grained, polished tannins. Silky, elegant and long. 


【Vinous 92】

Perfumed and nicely scented on the nose, fresh rose petals and raspberries. Clean and precise, a lovely clarity to the expression - crystalline with a softly mouthwatering strawberry juicy core - half tangy, half really quite mineral which, when added to the salty tannins, gives quite a chalky, almost dry wet stone ending. It's easy to drink, just missing a touch more spark and vibrancy, but good structure.

The 2021 La Lagune has turned out nicely in bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries, spices and truffles, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless palate with good depth of fruit, lively acids and sweet tannins.

An estate that continues to punch above its weight, the 2021 Château La Lagune sports a deep ruby/plum hue as well as a terrific bouquet of ripe black fruits, cassis, graphite, and scorched earth. One of the most serious, concentrated, age-worthy Haut-Médocs in the vintage, it has medium-bodied richness, a layered, concentrated mid-palate, background oak, and ripe tannins. Give it 2-4 years and enjoy over the following decade or more. This is one that's well worth seeking out.
